Help me find the photographer!

So, me and a friend have had a long running itch that needs scratching.

There's a photographer I studied at a-level whose photos were absolutely superb, apparently he uses movie sets to stage the photos, and they're absolutely amazing.

One example I can remember is a woman/man stood in a typical suburban American street at night and a lamppost, or what could be argued to be a spotlight from an alien spacecraft is shining down on them.

I can't for the life of me remember the name, so, hit me!

He's done some great shots, not sure I could get close to his budget though. If you're interested there's a very wide range of his work in the book Gregory Crewdson: 1985-2005. I treated myself to a copy Christmas before last.

Doesn't he charge upwards of a million dollars for some of his shoots due to the massive scale and logistics of executing some of the ideas? Pretty impressive.

Can't make my mind up about him, you can't fault the end result and the concepts, but 5 days to shoot one image, getting a town to close down their main street to allow the snow to settle

Either way, you've got to take your hat off to him

He should come to England, snow does a bloody good job of closing things on its own

There was a half hour program on him on Sky Arts recently, which gave a fascinating insight in to his processes and workflow.

Hang on a moment... he works with a DP (Director of Photography), doesn't touch the camera himself, works entirely by talking to people with a huge crew around him...he's a Director, not a Photographer.

5 weeks on a Sound Stage to make 5 still images? Impressive, I've worked on entire films shot quicker than that...
