Hola all! :D

So i'm planning to go to California with my mum and lil sis this summer

I've new to this booking flights malarky, since ive only been abroad when i was younger. So have been looking online, and the cheapest ticket i can find per adult is £537. (travelsupermarket.com)

Is there any way i can get a cheaper ticket? Roughly in the 400 figures, or am i asking for too much?

So far i've tried cheapflights, travelsupermarket, lastminute, gocompare and ebookers.

I want to go for a month, leaving after the 24th of July and return before the 1st of Sep. Hoping to leave from Brum airport to land in San Fransisco.

Is it worth going to a travel agent? I'm just hoping to find something under £500 each so i can go ahead and book.

Any help would be so so much appreciated.

Go to the travel agent - get prices and then go to the web site of the carrier and book it yourself. I was looing to go to Florida for a fly drive (6 of us going). We saved £300 going direct to the carrier.

be flexible, start with skyscanner on the web, expect to spend a lot of time comparing different routes, carriers and websites. I do this regularly and know it can't be done quickly AND find a good deal. Also - be aware that there are hidden catches with the credit card booking fees etc, I got a visa electron card on one of my accounts and it's saved tons of cash. See www.listentothepeople.co.uk too for airport and airline complaints - see what they say about ebookers and credit card fees on different sites.

That isnt that bad a price. I work in travel agencies and they give me their discounts and my flights to LA in the past have cost me about £420-£480 some have been via different routes but sub £500 is excellent if you can find it to LA/SF/Vegas.

Try the US airlines like united, continental, US, Delta etc they can be cheaper but usually never fly direct you will go to their hub in the states then fly on from there.

your only way of getting those flights cheaper is (as said) be more flexible. try different dates and different airports. If you use ba.com you'll see a calendar that shows when the cheaper flights are.

before buying, check if you can get cashback on quidco.com. expedia give up to 12%

Thanks for your reply guys!

The only problem is, i cant be more flexible as im off work at that time, and sis is off school. I can be flexible by a week or so, as long as its in the holidays.

I dont mind at all about connecting flights, if thats how i will get cheaper tickets. But still nothing under £500. Have tried all the above ideas apart from travel agents.

Have been searching for about 3 weeks now ???

Thanks wisemen! Tried phoning them, but he (the indian guy they put me through to) said it would be £555 for each adult, and getting a ticket under £500 would be next to impossible :(

You would find it cheaper to get to Heathrow or Gatwick rather than EM. I use any of the flight scraper sites but don't believe what you read - ultimately you'll still need to talk to someone and the price you get quoted will be more accurate.

Flights seem to have gone up loads recently though....

I can pass you a number of the person I use to book my travel with if you want?

Yeah thats what worries me Tulipone :(

Yes please Little John.

you could wait for another 9/11

our plane had loads of british cheap skates like me, and not a single american :)

re:flights
dont make the same mistake that i often make. i spend so long looking for a bargain that the flights go up in price and i end up spending more. sometimes its just best to bite the bullet
