Got a shot of my little Ruby which I really love.

But the background is crap, so if poss, I'd like to be able to change it.
Just a plain, nice and simple background. White maybe

Would love to learn a fairly quick and easy way of doing it, if there is such a thing!

TIA Andy (and Ruby!!)

You'd find going to a white background difficult with this shot mate as detail in the hair on the right hand side is blending into the background. If you shot this in RAW then you could do it using selective masking via channels but this is certainly not an easy process & otherwise I'd chalk it up to experience & find a better background next time. Cute kid & nice shot as is btw

Thanks mate.

It wasn't a 'planned' shot. I just like the pose and look, and wondered if it's worth trying to alter.

You said what I thought, about it not going to be easy :(

She's a little gem, bless her

Hi Andy - I had a go at this - but using a black background instead of white. Let me have your email addy and I'll send it to ya if you want it.

Throw the background darker instead.

Use a gradient to make it fall off softly then a little masking to control where the gradient affects the image.

Cheers, that almost makes sense so I'll give it a try

Selected the background and blurred and darkened it a bit. Selected just the eyes and sharpened just a tad. A bit of cleaning up with clone and history brushes...

In photoshop i used the quick selection tool to select Ruby then i went to SELECT and chose inverse which now deselected Ruby and selected the background. I used the - and + to fine tune.

Here's another version. The raw or larger version would have made it a little easier...

Incidentally Andy, the one I sent you was edited entirely in Lightroom3.
