i've had look at the really great list provided on a stickie but for me its very confusing. im looking at something free and good for beginners so far im just using windows generic editor which is good but i want a bit more technical or more choice since i can only do brightness, contrast, "temperature" (makes it look like its sunny when its not or cold when its not can't describe it) and stuff like that but its not as good with dealing with white or light colours and toning them down to a more appropriate colour. what do you think. im still pondering away

Gimp is a very good free photo editor. Give it a go. You've nothing to lose and some tutorials on YouTube will help you pick up the tools quickly.

Theres a few editors that will let you change things like that. Gimp looks daunting but is fairly easy to get the hang of, and theres load of tutorials on youtube for it.

i tried downloading that one but can't even manage that shall keep on trying at it though
It's always a steep learning curve at the start .... don't give up too soon! Or take a break and come back to it. It's often worth it in the end.

The most basic editor I would recommend is Irfanview - tiny, fast, simple and very easy to use.

For something more powerful, but still easy to use, try Digikam - it's a great editor, and very useful.

For both these and GIMP as mentioned above, you need to be aware that any changes you make to the image are 'destructive' i.e. they change the actual image being edited (Lightroom, DXO, Capture One etc don't change the basic image). Always save your image after editing using a different file name so that your original is un-altered and can be edited again.

I used to use paint.net http://www.getpaint.net/index.html (Make sure you click on the right download, the one that says paint.net with a version number) , there are quite a few tutorials online and it is a good editor, although Gimp seems to be more popular.
My wife uses Picasa not so many options but easier to use.

has anyone heard of magix ?? thats a free online download has anyone heard of it any good or no ?? i think that GIMPs a bit daunting shall give it another go to see if i can get the nac of it first

i've had a good go, i think gimps too complicated for me. i think for now i'll settle for Irfran View, its not exactly what i want but it'll do for now i think i'm just after something like the windows 7 editor but with a bit more options in terms of sharpening images and blurring/editing parts of a photo. irfan probably lets you do that i just need a better more in depth look at it for now
