Hi,

I'm a newbie here. I'm really interested in photography and i'm looking to buy my first DSLR. I've been doing a lot of research on the different products out there and I keep going between these two and now im totally confused!

I've read that photographers perfer Canon and Nikon but the Sony looks really tempting. I'm looking to spend around £300-350. On the trusted reviews website they both have excellent scores.

I've heard that the standard cannon lens is a bit rubbish, and being a starter I don't want to spend too much by having to buy another lens at first. I've just read that the 400d has been discontinued to be replaced with the 450D but I don't think it's in my price range. A300 price looks good on Jessops with cashback at the moment.

Help! I'm in two minds.

I've got the Sony A300 and i feel its a really good camera if your starting off like me. The Sony A300. I got mine at Jessops for £430 with a Tamron lens 70-300mm lens and a 18-70mm lens. Both lenses, i found are great for a hole selection of photos. The Sonys LCD screen can be moved to a position where you can see the live view instead of using the eyeview thing when the camera is away from you, which for some reason atracted me to the camera.

Ive never used canon 400d so i couldnt say which is better so good look with geting your camera, and welcome to the site

For just under £300 mark the Sony A300 + kit lens represent good value for money. Its got similar features to the Canons, but its got image stabilization built in the body so what ever lens you put on it will be stabilized. The A300 as a 2.7" tilting LCD plus live view, The 400d as neither. Best to handle them both and navigate there menus see which feels best and easiest to use. On the lens front you'll have lots to choose from for both makes even secondhand ones.

PS. think the Canon cashback offer has finished for now. The Sony end at the end of this month.

personaly i dont think any are much better than the other these days

if it were me i would handle them, you might prefer one more than the other, then i would compare price additional equipment to see the difference in cost

hi, i started a "which camera for newbie" thread about 2-3 months ago,
i ended up buying a Canon 400D and i have had great results from it and i dont regret it whatsoever.
I took the advice of everyone on here to handle all the cameras first and the 400D felt right for me, the kit lens isnt all that bad either.

The second thing that forum members pointed me to was, where and if i could get lenses off friends and relatives, and that it might narrow me down to one make!

So, imo its just what suits you, im just a newbie to this, but these were the points that everyone pointed me to, and they seemed to benefit me in my camera choice.

I hope you get an SLR and enjoy it,

Dion!
