Hi all.

We are finally doing the Mach Loop next Friday.

I own the following ....

5dmk2
40d
Sigma 70-200mm 2.8
Canon 70-200 f4 L IS USM
Kenko x2 TC

I'm trying to work my best setup with that lot.

Bearing in mind the f4 lens won't work with the TC, I'm thinking

5dmk2 with TC and 70-200 which
Will give me 140-400 at f5.6

And

40D with the 70-200 which gives me 112-320 at f4.

What do people reckon?

Obviously putting the TC and 70-200 on the
40d will give me lots more reach up to 640 at 5.6 - but wondering if less reach / better image quality preferred

I've never been before .... We're doing Cad West and hoped some of your regulars could advise!

Cheers.

Anth.

Hi Anth, I've shot 70-200 on a crop body before down there, might've been on my old 40d too. I'll dig some images out when I'm on the pc later for you to give you an idea.

Rich.

Here's a few uncropped examples from West...

40D at 190mm

40D at 170mm

and even when you can't spot it until the last second, 400D at 120mm

I've some examples from East & Bwlch should you consider there too. 300mm, 400mm or even 600mm can be handy down there, but don't rule out what you've already got in your camera bag. Enjoy the day out and fingers crossed something turns up.

Love these - thank you!

Looking forward to going .... Spent a tenner wisely at a car boot sale this morning!

Haha hopefully neither be needed on the day but best to be prepared for long quiet rainy spells. Had a few of those days down there!

Cheers folks!

Just booked a table at nearby pub (cross keys) for food afterwards .... Wearer forecast cracking too!!!

Personally with that gear I would use the 5d2 with the canon 70-200 from west or bwlch.

midge repellant...they are a nightmare atm

It works on Typhoons too. At least it did when I was last there. Didn't see a single one all day. Sighhhhhh!!!

Gear wise I took my 70-200/F2.8 and 300/F4 on a Nikon D300s. So I'd say you'd be ok with what you're suggesting. Lightweight waterproofs, some food/coffee and a shelter too. But if you're as unfit as I am, make it a lightweight as possible. Cad West starts off as a long slow incline, then turns up hill suddenly.

It's a bit like fishing. You go there set up for the day and the fish may, or may not come along. But well worth it when you get a bite.
