I am in the process of starting up my photography company I am wanting to focus on the Social (events, portraits and weddings) to begin with.

I've decided to call it: Just See Photography as there are at least 2 established photographers with my own name

I am currently in the process of designing the logo. I am wanting to use a styalised eye with a mechanical iris in the middle. Could I have some feedback on the following logos. I'll combine the text Just See Photography with them later in various locations later.

Ignore the sizes of the logos

Number 1 - large iris

Number 2 - small iris

Number 3 - rounded eye & small iris

Number 4 - rounded eye & large iris

Number 5 - sharp cornered eye & small iris

Number 6 - sharp cornered eye & large iris

Well I like the large iris versions of all the styles more but I'm a little torn between no outline and the sharp cornered eyes.

Cool idea nice and simple and to the point
But I am not sure the "catchlight" does them any favours  maybe dumb it down, replace with small a "starburst" or lose it all together ?
just my opinion of course

I agree with cobra and that the catchlight isn't quite there but I wasn't sure what to suggest so thought I'd stick to the bits I did have an opinion on.

I guess you might try some different shapes, sizes and positions, then see if that leads to anything.

(please insert your own smut here if required ;) )

No 6 - easily recognised as an eye - and for anyone remotely 'civilised' as a part of a camera too

Well done

In developing (whichever you choose) as a 'Brand' just remember to have it on EVERYTHING

If you make it BIG, even locally, you won't need your company name in time - the logo image will say it all

Good luck

Simon .... as someone who works in branding, I should point out that the shutter/iris effect is quite an established logo within the field. Not to say that you shouldn't use it, just that you shouldn't be suprised if you see it out there a lot. Have you thought about using straight lines instead of curved ones for the cornea (with a kink half way down)? I like the small iris, but the curved lines look a bit awkward.

From a design point of view, you should really avoid the 'eye' border as it will date very, very quickly. Plus, you'll find it a difficult shape to incorpate into stationary. You really need to run up a very good quality version of the image, with antialiasing at a high res to give it that 'crisp' look, avoiding the pixelation you're seeing on the images you've posted. The blue you've chosen is too strong (imo) and would be much better with a softer powder blue, perhaps utilising a charcoal gray for the border.

Any idea what font you're using for the company name? You should have a play around with how you compose the two together for any stationary and websites you might put together. Any other ideas for the company name? Just See isn't bad, but it's a little clumsy.

Good luck!

I rather like number 6 too Simon ...

BUT ... :suspect: ... I would definitely drop the 'catchlight' as it looks false and does not add any impact imhgo ...

:p

Number 6 for me.

Breaker, thanks for your reply, I did know the shutter / iris effect was out there alot, I was wanting to build on that, how effective is this as an idea? I have already dimmed the blue from my first attempt but I shall definately go further . I shall give the straight line leaf edge a go, but I'm not sure myself without seeing it.

When you say the "eye" border I presume you are meaning the () around the shutter iris effect, are you talking about the simplicity of the () or the fact it's there at all? I had thought about making it a bit more "flowing" and "open" as in the glassesdirect.co.uk logo .

As for the font I was going for a simple Sans Serif font but at the moment I'm not sure what one, I was wanting to get the core of the logo right first. I had drafted along this line (but no where near final yet) you can happily ignore positioning and sizing.

As you are in branding what are the key tips you can give to someone creating their brand, as in choice of:
- Name
- Logo
- Font
- Positioning
- Size
- etc.

Thanks to everyone else who's responded too; I note that most people don't like the catchlight - it will go. I'm definately thinking of keeping the larger aperture as that seems to be the most popular.

cool! I do prefer the text layout in your post #10 though

The latter versions are better for me - the more abstract eye outlines are more subtle. I would 'soften' the hexagonal effect if you can - slightly distort the sides abit, so it's more of a circular shape? Just a thought.

Logo's are always very hard to design as it forms such an integral part of your corporate id and brand. It must be easy enough to understand and reproduce well enough. The iris is well known in the photography business but how many "ordinary" people now recognise this as part of a camera? I think the font is good but i'd try and work around the eye alone rather than the iris.

There is also a photographer using my name which is a shame as I quite like his pictures.

If you need any marketing help/contacts/pr then let me know.

Cheers cobra

I've also left aligned

No problem
Hmm Now I am not so sure now, that "left aligned"
looks pretty good too
I guess it depends on how big you want the logo. for a banner the top one works as a small logo I think the second works better

but how many "ordinary" people now recognise this as part of a camera?
I bet there are quite a few especially with the James Bond film "intro's
