Hi there

my beloved yanked out the external hard drive without ejecting it properly. I now can't open LR4. It opens for a couple of seconds then crashes.

Any ideas.....

All help gratefully received

try opening lightroom while holding alt key - this will bring up a dialogue to choose a catalogue. you may be able to open a backed up catalogue.

ps can you browse files on your external drive?

and do you have a backup?

I don't have any other application that can open raw files. I can open the hard drive and browse the files. I have a back up, just not of the last 2 weeks.

Lightroom opens for two seconds then closes. Have reset pRAM, shut down, restarted etc, reinstalled LR4........am at a loss

Even my old LR3 does the same???

Hi Shaheed - is lightroom is installed on the local hard drive on the mac?
what happens when you try opening lightroom when holding down alt key?
maybe try removing the plist file (try renaming it instead of deleting)

other option is a reinstall of lightroom, but curious why both versions seem corrupt, unless they are both trying to open a catalogue file on the external drive that has become corrupt...

Opened with alt key, chose different catalogue. Same result.

Edit. Lr installed on iMac hard drive

And what's the plist?

Thanks for all the help btw

Tried to launch from a back up catalogue on another external hard drive.......same problem!!! It opens, then asks if I want to take part in the survey, then it attempts to load my pics. It then crashes and closes. As i said, this has happened with a reinstall and using the backup catalogue on a different external hard drive!

Any ideas anybody?

the plist file is the com.adobe.Lightroom4.plist file, located in [user name]/Library/Preferences.

try renaming this.

New development. Have opened Lr on wifes log in and this works?!?

Imported pictures from hard drive. Go figure?!

Doesn't explain why it won't work on mine?

Will try that once I've finished adding the pictures to the wifes "new" catalogue.

I tries looking for the plist file yesterday but couldn't find it.

Shaheed, your library files may not be visible. I am not at home at the moment, in fact I am typing this on a steam powered xp work computer but have a quick google and you may be able to find your library files and delete those plist files.

Renamed the file but now closes after 3 seconds!

Grrr

Can sort of use it in the wifes log in but lost lots of little bits - presets, saved settings. Also it's just inconvenient!

Bloody 'puter!!

Delete the plist files, LR will remake them when you boot back up. worth a try!

to be honest youre lucky the drive didnt throw a wobbler. the amount of drives that ive had in recently that weren't edjected from a mac and disconnected and had to do full data recovery on is unreal.

Here's a link from the adobe website detailing the locations of files related to the running of Lightroom, inc the preferences .plist file.

http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/preference-file-locations-lightroom-4.html

It also explains, via a link, how to access the user library folder if your are using OS 10.7 or above.

As others have suggested try deleting the preferences first.

Either I've been incredibly lucky, or you've been incredibly unlucky. I end up doing this a lot and I've never had to do a recovery at all.

The only thing I can think of is that my half of the computer has become corrupted in some way. My wife did the dreaded repair permissions as well so it's all out of kilter!

Found all the hidden files using the alt and go menu but it's made ***ger all difference.

I've still no clue but have at least been able to use LR on the computer. Just not on my login.

Nobody else have this problem?

Do you have any plugins that your wife doesnt use?

She's never opened Lr on her side. I normally do all the os updates but she did it from her log in last time and it's all a bit messy now. It reset loads of permissions and was a royal pain in the bum.

Sounds like Dan knackered it mate! Time to let her have that one and buy yourself a new one.
