I have a Canon 28-135mm lens that worked very well with my old 30D. However I have now upgraded to a 50D, and now find the 28-135 sometimes doesnt give very good results.
I tried a Canon 24-105 L lens, which was fantastic, but very expensive.
So my question is, would you advise biting the bullet and buy a 24-105, or is there a cheaper option that will be very nearly as good.
I need image stablised "do everything" lens, that includes Portrait, Landscape and Macro.
Any advice would be gratefully recieved.

Maybe you need to try the micro adjustment feature of the 50D. There's no reason that the 28-135 should be worse on than on the 30D. You may not always see the benefit of the extra sensor resolution but that's about it.
