Just had a quick look at that and I can,t see how it would work ,you see I,ve got 2 head and shoulder shots filling each frame that I want to print on the same sheet with no border seperation. Mind you it could me (read "most likely") thats not doing it right.

The simplest way you could do this with the least amount of knowledge of PP software is to do this:
Say for example the two images you have are 800x600 in size then open up a new file and size it so that it covers the two images i.e 800x1200. Then all you need to do is copy and paste the two different portrait images into the new file side by side. Adjust and print to your hearts content.

If you posted the pics up here I'm sure someone will be able to show you some results and explain how they reached the final pic.
Paulmack's example is easy enough but if the 2 pics have different lighting levels/white balance etc then it could look odd without processing each layer further. Thats why I suggest putting the 2 pics up here for people to attempt to help

Choose file-new-photomerge panorama in full edit mode.
In the first photomerge dialogue box select your source files.
click add to open files
Choose desired mode under layout
If it not done automatically drag image thumbnails onto work area wiyh select image tool
arrange and position images
Click OK

Vinny made a good point about getting the levels right for each image. In the image above they are a little too dark and under exposed. I have run your image quickly through Lightroom to brighten it up a little so you can see what I mean. Also your painting of the background black needed tidying up a little so you have to be careful when doing so to make sure you dont miss any bits. Sometimes it helps to tilt your monitor back a little to see it better.
Anyway keep trying to becomes easier the more you play with elements or photoshop etc.

I can see where you were going with this now, and I would have made a couple of slight changes.
First, I'd have brought them a little closer together to close that gap, I'd also give your lad a bit of space to look into, then finally cropped the top down slightly.
Here's a quick edit of how I'd have tweaked it. I'm using Photoshop CS4, so have layer masks which helps here.
In addition to what I described above, the only other things I've done here are added a bit of warmth and colour to their faces, then brushed a little black around the necklines so they're not abruptly cut off by the edge of the photo
I probably need to adjust for hair colour, but that's not a massive task (well not when you've been doing this for a while...)

If you want realism, then they're going to have a lot of empty space in the image.
The objective, at least in my version, is to bring them together, not provide a true representation of likely separation between two physical bodies.
Showing closeness of mother and son, eliminating the dark empty gulf between them.
It's a montage of two images, not a realistic representation of how it may look if they'd been shot together...
