i am wondering wether my les is soft or am i paranoid as i went longleat and most of them are blurry of soft.

no not at all, just staright out of the camera,

i am surprised as this seems like one of the only sharp ones.

i guess i missed focues sometimes but i do not no why some of my images are soft
 
Looks spot on to me.

Post up one of the soft shots and we'll have a look - it might be that your shutter speed wasn't quite fast enough for your focal length - were you shooting on auto?
 
It's soft all right, you can hardly read the words on that hut :p

Edit: Just in case, the giraffes are fine ;)

Hi Mark,

None of the exif data is present in the jpg - I presume you used a save for web in photoshop (which slims the file size down).

If you can link through to the original file or post the exif data (right click on your image and go to properties then check the details out to get the focal length and shutter speed) and post them up here.

Thats your problem right there.

Your shutter speed wasn't fast enough for a handheld shot. Your focal length was 263mm and your shutter speed was 1/125 which means the picture is blurry because of camera shake (you moved ever so slightly whilst it was being taken.

I presume you weren't using auto mode for it?

Raising the ISO would have made the sensor more sensitive to light and would have increased your shutter speed.
 
so my lens is fine but the hand holding wasn't

Camera shake, I would think, then. 263 is a long reach for 1/125 - even a tiny movement when you took the shot would cause the blurring in the monkey shot. Perhaps use a tripod?

If you used the same lens for the giraffes as you did for the monkey then your lens is fine.

If you'd used a tripod the shutter speed would have been okay. Most people can't take pictures handheld when theres that much of a difference in focal length to shutter speed. You'd have had to take the shot with the shutter speed of 1/500 (or next available shutterspeed that is higher than 1/263) to have no shake whatsoever at that focal length, aperture and iso. You might have been able to pull it off at 1/250 but it would have been tricky.

ISO 200 would have probably given you the extra speed you needed.
 
agreed- giraffes look fine. monkey looked like camera shake before I scrolled down to see the exif. If you're using the long end of your 70-300, then look at a shutter speed of 1/400 or so.

And theres the differance;) Half the focal length....three times the shutter speed;)

:lol: What makes you think mine will be any better? ;) However, I shall certainly be posting a few. Never been before, so if you have any recommendations of 'must see' areas, apart from the safari park of course, I wold be very glad to hear them. ;)

To be honest it would be unfair to compare the two;) the 18-55mm is a kit lens where as the Sigma 2.8 EX is a pro grade lens. Don't get me wrong...the 18-55 can produse some good results but for speed of focus and sharpness the 24-70 beats it hands down;)

I see from you photos you sometimes venture down to the solent area? Perhaps we could meet up sometime and you could take it for a test drive on your 400D:thumbs:
 
i ve some otter pics but they wereall in the shade meaning my shutter speed was to slow,

Have you got any filters for the 24-70 Eric? I'm wondering about getting it but am a bit wary about the large filter sizes needed.
