Hi guys,

For the past week, I have been having a strange thing happen to my air con in the car:

- When I start the engine first time, and I turn it on, it works.
- When ambient temperature is around 25 degrees and below in the car, it works.
- When the temperature soars above 25 degrees, it comes on for about 2-3 minutes, then starts blowing warm air.

I hear the compressor kicking in, and I assume there is gas in it because at any temperature below 20-25 degrees, it blows cold.

Has anyone else here experienced the same thing or something similar in their cars, or are there any air con techs here who can help me find an answer.

Could it be that it just needs a service/regass? Or am I looking at a bigger problem?

Probably still needs refilling.

Does sound like a re-gas / top up required - if you have a local garage that does it, get them to check the level of gas and they will be able to tell you if it's low.

Wife's previous fiesta had a very similar issue - with the compressed kicking in etc but not really cooling the car - checked and was low on gas so had similar issues with when you really needed the AC it didn't really do it and took an age to cool the car down, had it checked, re-gased, re-oiled and worked a treat :)

+1 which car make/model/year would help

AC needs regassing or checking every couple of years; they leak refridgerant to atmosphere over time.

take it to an air con service centre

Setting aside the symptoms, I recall a radio programme (was it Jeremy Vine?) where car a/c was discussed and the subject of re-gassing came up.

The expert that called in made the strong point that a loss of gas is due to a leak or other failure and re-gassing is not the solution until or unless the reason for the loss has been fully checked and repaired before the re-gas. He recommending a specialist centre for this more investigatory approach, saying that the less diligent places will 'simply' refill it and send you on your way!

I've had to regas a fair few cars over the years. Every garage that I used (non are main dealers) were very serious about that and put in a dye and pressure test before refilling. So yes by definition it has to leak for it to leave, but that doesn't mean it is a bad thing.

I would also recommend to always leave it on.
