tonight we are having a bit of a do, mum in laws 80th
Family want a shot with all grand children! 9 in total 3 are children aged 9, 5 and three. The rest are adults.
I have quite a large living room with a good window for natural light. A large sofa (at right angles to the window) that will sit at least 5.

forgot to add I have tripod, 40d and the following lenses 24-70. nifty fifty and a 70-200.
Any help would be great thanks

If the weather is decent enough, have you thought of taking an outside shot? personally i like family photos outside i think it gives it an atmospheric feel to them. If you do go for the inside shot, why not try the adults standing behind the sofa (if poss) and the little uns crossed legged on the sofa.

24mm might not be wide enough if there isn't quite a hefty bit of space in front of the that sofa. Also, the light drop off from the person nearest the the window to the furthest might be a bit extreme.

As said, outside could well be the best way to go, even if it's raining. Just as a though, family shots are often best in my eyes when they are closely grouped, informal and intimate. Having a big smiling, happy bunch all under a collection of brolleys could be a really nice and different from the norm, shot.

The most important thing is keep relaxed and make sure everyone gets to be themselves. It's more tha likely that no matter how makes takes you do, there will always be someone not looking quite right, so it's best not to get too hung up on it.

hopefully that would be the best option, but by the looks of it we are in for a typical bank holiday with the weather!
I have benches that would be great outside.
mum and 3 little ones on the bench grown ups behind and a couple on the kneeling or sitting on the arms at the side

thanks yes that umbrella idea sounds like fun. It would suit her sense of humour:lol: I take hundreds of photos but I really dont like the idea of having to take one group.
We are having an album made up for her too I bet the best ones will be those.

Don't forget to take a bin bag or something to kneel on outside with you if it's soaking. It's a shot that'll need you to get low. :)

Although you may get more of a laugh out of your group if your squatted down like a chimp and bouncing around to get the framing right.

You will both capture memories of an event that probably wouldn't get preserved if you didn't do it. That's way way more important than how technically great the image is, which will no doubt be totally fine anyway.

Remember that you make images because you enjoy it, relax and have some fun with it.

I should have more confidence in my photos, I will probably take a couple on auto aswell as manual so that i have some back up, I will get my husband to take some with the compact too! least that way I may come out with one or two keepers lol
