Hi all,

Just after a few pointers please, I have some sharp focussed shots of some black kites taken on a lovely sunny day. Only trouble is they all look like this;

I know where I went wrong now. I did shoot RAW, is there any way I can save them and how. Tried adjusting the exposure and dialling in a bit of fill light and recovery but can't get them looking any better then;

Thanks in advance! :)

You need to boost your midtones and shadows to bring out the detail in the bird

I had a quick punt on your 2nd picture in photoshop.
Obviously this is done on a jpeg so there will be a small amount of quality reduction

Brought some detail out, well done but still not a keeper

Yeah. The first one is a definate no no I think, the second is on the cusp of saviour but when you do bring back some of the midtones and shadows you realise it isn't as sharp as it could be.

Yeah Stuart wasnt being awful, but really to be honest, I know maybe there the first shots, and hes chuffed, but they will never be keepers, its good to see some detail being brought out though, I get your pping it is encouraging to go out and get better, :thumbs:

I guess better advice would be to over expose by a stop to a stop and a half, the bird, would be better, although then the sky will be more blown, but the bird will be better exposed :thumbs: try get it right in camera :)

Agreed and if you don't like the sky you can always layer in a better one.

well thanks for the efforts guys, pity that when exposed right it doesn't look as sharp as it did underexposed!

Lesson learnt with that one, as I said I know where I went wrong and will try and avoid doing it again. Generally they would have been scrapped, however those shots are the first time that particular kite took to a thermal and soared and the falconer who has been training her (and is also a friend) quite fancied a momento.

I had a bit of a play and this is about as good as I can get easily.

This is starting to posterise a bit now.
