A guy on a car forum has asked me for some advice on setting up for some bird and wildlife photography. Now I know what Nikon gear is suitable, but have little knowledge of Canon stuff. His budget is initially £1000,I know that won`t get him into the supertelephotos of either brand.

Which Canon bodies would work for him with ,say a 100-400?

Secondhand is an option that I shall talk him into........

All the Canon digital bodies will work with the 100-400...which one to choose is the main issue! Most people start off with a 400/450D, although a 2nd hand 30/40D would perhaps be a better start for bird photography! They have higher fps and better noise handling :)

Secondhand....I'd be looking for a 300/4 ISL, a Kenko 1.4x T/C and a 30D body. Probably just tips over the £1000 given the recent price rises but £1100 would clear it.

Hi,

well so far I have had a 350D, 30D, 1D Mark II, 40D and a 50D, and all have been good/great for wildlife in their own way but all slightly different if you know what I mean.

If I was advising anyone for a used body it would be either the 40 or 50D, but only if the 50D was available used, I don't think I would buy a new 50 over a used 40, esp as there is about £400 difference.

Let's look at each one in turn.

350D, would probably discount this one as a bit old now and AF a bit hit and miss for Wildlife.

30D, still a great camera, used prices at around £300 or slightly less, a good buy, AF is decent, noise is pretty good, but.....

A 40D can be had for around a £100 more S/H and it has better. faster AF to the 30D and has superior noise with higher ISO's.

The 1D Mark II that I owned was the dog *******s for fast AF, but you lose the 1.6 crop factor as it's a 1.3x camera, the AF is superfast, is precise and the images are great, a bit more noise using higher ISO's, waterproof and rugged for serious wildlife use, sling it over your shoulder and forget about it, used prices vary from £650 - £850 just now, I miss it but would only buy another one at the right price ie: £650 not £850 ;)

Now the 50D, a fantastic body, probably better AF than the 40 but not as fast as the 1D Mark II, but not by much, it takes a bit more work getting the images to look right especially if cropping at higher ISO's as the 15mp sensor starts to look soft when cropping too much, however if you can fill a large part of the frame and therefore saving on cropping , then it's a superb piece of kit but at a price with it being so new.

Here are samples from each body except the 40D as I only had it a day or so before giving it to my dad. The pics have been taken with different lenses, but at least it might give you an idea as to what can be achieved with each body.

Now looking at each of those images, can you see something significant, yip, the glass, each body takes good images, but the glass is what makes the significant difference, the image of the Dunnock with the 30D and 500mm Siggy is one of my best and probably makes you (and myself ) wonder why I got rid of the 30D, the joys of upgradeitis, although it does show how good the 50D is with the Canon 400mm F5.6L lens which is a third of the price of the Siggy, I just wish I had had the chance to try the 50D and Sigma 500mm combo before selling it.

I think what I am saying is this, if it was me with £1000 I would buy a used 30D OR 40D, (les maclean has a 40D for sale just now) and put the balance towards a decent lens

Hope this helps, now I'm off for a rest, my fingers hurt :D

Mike.

PS: I notice that Bob has recommended a similar move, he posted whilst I was typing this up, he know a thing or two about gear

^^That's exactly what i was thinking tbh.

30d body at about £250-300ish (With kit lens, and used of course)

Then a 300f4L for approx £500-550. (Mifsuds havea used one in for 525)

Then that leaves space for a decent walkabout, like a siggy 17-70.

The suggestion of a 30D + 300F4 + 1.4 will probably be the best starting option (Don't rule out the Sigma 100-300F4 - considering he may also be a car enthusiats I feel motorsport coming on...) - and be sure to leave enough money for a kit lens too!

Excellent replies and advice, thanks very much.......

thanx for all the advice , oh my god! you can really get sucked into this, i never realised there was so much kit, the two mags could have been written for me, photography monthly has an excellent bit on Garden birds and the what camera has an head to head on the 40D and D90, and guess what ? the D90 comes out on top, not that i understand half the reasons why, i need to educate myself , D90 does seem very good value

Hi Spice...

Hi,

May I just ask; I was surprised not to see the 5D (not MkII) on the list of recommendations, particularly as prices seem to be about par with the 1D Mark II. Was this because it isn't on your previously owned list or because it's full frame sensor, or possibly for another reason?

My interests are vested as I'm just waiting for employment stabilisation before looking for either a 1D Mark II or a 5D to live alongside my 400D . Or I develop an alternate strategy to stay 1.6 crop and upgrade.

Hi Fracster  gonna go with your advice
40D
100-400 f5.6 etc there are some good new bundles for about £800 then the zoom for about £300 so not to far of budget.Oh and then the power steering pump and pipes fail on my Merc and cost me £1200 more than my budget Doh!:bang:

the bundle has a ef-s15-55 take it this is a walkabout ?
4 gb innovate and manfrotto 418b is this a bag ?

418B....Dunno, done a quick search and it comes up with zilch.
