Help for newbie

I have a cannon eos 400D rebel, I have been away and on my return uploaded my photos onto my computer, in the same manner as always.
When I have come to edit them some have been saved in jpeg which is usual, and some in CR2 which I have never heard of. I use Corel Paint Shop pro for my editing, but it will not open them as it says they are in the wrong format (CR2). in fact only the windows picture viewer will open them so I cant do any editing. I tried to open them with Paint as well to save as a jpeg, but it wont work.

(1) How do I change them to jpeg ?
(2) Why did some of the photo's save in this format in the first place ?

Please help me as I really need to edit them.

CR2 is a raw file
Have you inadvertantly changed the ( camera) settings from jpeg to raw or raw & jpeg?

Check the file names / numbers are they duplicated? you may find you have the same file saved a jpeg and raw

Are you sure the CR2 files are the ones that are opning in windows veiwer?
it never used to open canon raw files
download something like picasa ( its free) that will allow you to open raws and edit them.
and save as jpeg

hi, the CR2 files are Raw files,

your camera will be set to take a raw file a jpeg, meaning that they are just duplicates. a lot of people like to take photos in RAW format as this means that they can easily tweak the photo afterwards in software. i have never used corel paint shop, so i am not sure if it can open the CR2 files,

to change what type of format your camera saves file in do this, go to any mode apart from Auto.

1. press menu
2. under the first tab scroll to qaulity (press ok)
3. you will now be able to choose the format, at the moment i think yours must be set at RAW+ L
if you just want to shoot jpegs choose either L,M,S
4. press ok.

and i think that should be it, im sure some other people here will be kind enough to let you know if corel paint can open RAW files and what benfits they have.

Later versions of Paint Shop Pro open Canon CR2's - certainly X2 does.

Thanks guys, downloaded picassa and changed the save as to jpeg. It works thanks again
