On saturday i'm off to crufts with my youngest daughter so i was thinking i could get some good shots, the thing is i only have basic kit, a nikon d40x with kit lens, my question is can i get some reasonable shot with what i have.

any advice welcome.

Thanks Dave

Sure you can. Are you going to be shooting in manual/auto mode?

as a complete beginner it will be very much trial and error

Im a beginner myself Dave, have some fun, its the most important part of photography i've learned. If your going on saturday you've got a few days until then to practice :p if you want. Put it into manual mode and practice taking pictures at home in different light conditions that way you know what works when.

Are you familiar with shooting RAW Dave? I only ask, cause the lighting in the NEC is notoriously bad. It'll fool an Auto white balance setting in a jiffy. If you shoot RAW, you can correct it later and apply the change to the whole batch.

is there anybody going on Thursday??

Hi Dave, I will be heading down Saturday too. I will be spending quite a bit of time with the Scottish deerhounds. I would happily help you out.
that would be great Jimi i'll see if i can spot you near the deerhounds.

Many thanks Dave

I'd like to see some Airedale shots.;)

Sorry Dave, work commitments are now dictating that I can't go Saturday :bang: Take some decent pics of the Deerhounds for me

i'll see what i can do

cheers,

Light over the rings will be quite good but shots will be limited by where you can stand. If you go to the benching areas you will find most owners will quite willingly 'stand' their dog for you to photo if asked nicely, but you will find the light much more subdued in this area so a nifty fifty would be quite handy, also try and avoid flash, some dogs and owners don't react to well to it lol

Sorry forgot to add, due to the artificial lighting there the use of a grey card will help.
