Hello..

Total noob here. I've had my nikon d3200 now for 2 years but never really used it and I only have the kit lens it came with but now I want to try and get out and use the camera. I would like to take photos of my city the good, the bad and the ugly parts. I'm just wondering what would be the perfect all rounder lens..

Thanks guys

tbh the kit lens is pretty decent and covers the right sort of focal lengths for what you describe (at least in my view). One option always worth considering is the rather excellent 35mm f1.8G DX lens, around £120 new and less than that used.

Well you have not given any indication of budget,so with the body in mind I would say, have a look at the Nikkor AF-S 16-35mm f/4G ED VR .

This is an outstanding lens for the money and will give you access to the tight area,s of your bad and ugly.

You do sacrifice one stop over a f2.8,but,with VR they do say that gives you a four stop help.

Well worth a look and of course on your body will be the equivalent of 24-52mm,but,of course when you upgrade your body at some time to FX you still have a wonderful lens.

Get out and use it with the kit lens. When you know what the kit lens does well, what it doesn't do so well and what you want to do yourself you'll have a better idea what sort of lens would help you improve. Changing lens isn't a shortcut to just getting out their and getting some practice using the camera. You won't get better shots with a better lens until you've got some practice in. Stick with what you've got and use it.

Thanks for the quick replies guys..

My budget would be £150-250.
I will see how I go with the kit lens just seems like I struggle when I want to photograph something that I can't get close to..

So you've already identified a shortcoming in the kit lens versus what you want to do. This is what's known as relevant information when asking about recommendations for a lens.

Use the kit lens for a while, get some practice in, identify as much relevant information as you can and include it with your question.. ;)
