HELP!! corrupted pictures I think

Hello I hope someone can help basically I went out the other day took some pictures came home put them on my laptop then from then it went really slow and just kept not responding...

I then went to put them on lightroom to edit when it was responding in between and they all say .... An unexpected end of file occurred.... ( I shoot in raw btw of this makes a difference) and when I click on the pictures on windows folders bit when I view them they have all lines through them..

Does this mean it's the sd card? And how will I know if it is? Because I don't want this to happen again. It looks as though it's got some little scratches on the gold plates at the back but all 3 cards I have, look the same on the back and the other 2 are fine!?

I hope I haven't made this sound even more confusing then what it is already lol thanks
 
Looks like all the images are corrupt, so forget them, and do some tests on the card and camera.

Test one. Is the camera fine with the OTHER cards?
Test two. Without formatting is, does the dodgy card continue to corrupt files? If so...format it and test again.


Basically though, if one particular card caused me any trouble whatsoever, I'd bin it, or if under warranty, RMA it. I certainly wouldn't trust it.


Is it a Sandisk card? Some of them have very long warranties... check before binning it.

All the cards have been fine this is the first problem I have had with them. And the pictures are no longer on the sd card there on my external hard drive, and yeah there sandisk thanks for the reply
 
This is why I told you in your other thread re memory cards for your holiday to go with lots of smaller sized ones. Imagine 32/64gb of pics taken travelling around america (I think that's where you're going) then getting home and the card was knackered... not like you can just nip back the following day and take them all again.
 
There is a program called something like "flash card tester" which will scan the card and tell you of any problems. With regards to the images there are many free programs that will extract files from corrupted cards.

Unless you have a camera with 2 card slots... then one can back up the other. However, in this case, with a D3200.. I agree.

Only if the files are intact, as they are designed to recover files from cards that have since been fast formatted, or have corrupt formatted. The the card is correctly formatted, but contains corrupt files, it highly unlikely they'll be recoverable via software. Not impossible... but highly unlikely.

I've always been able to get the majority of files back from a corrupted card. I've only ever used them for this purpose

It depends what's corrupted them. If the actual file data is currupt it won't. If it's the card's file structure that's hosed, it will, as that's what they're designed for. It depends on what's wrong with the card. The latter is far more common that the former, so it's always worth a try.

I'd get rid of, or RMA the card afterwards though.
 
It depends on what is corrupt.

If you've corrupted the file allocation table, then you can use something like Recuva or CgSecurity PhotoRec

If you've damaged the actual files, then that's a lot harder. It depends where in the file the damage is. Google for Photo File Repair, there are many tools - some even work.

If you've lost data in the middle of the image - you may have to photo shop the fix.
 
As I understand it, it's relatively easy to recover files that have been deleted by mistake or accidentally formatted over. The data still exists, and it's just the controller that's been changed to indicate that those areas of the card are now free to be written over. But until they are over-written, the original data still exists and can be retrieved with generic software. Lots of free stuff on-line.

For more serious problems, contact a data recovery service like DataTrack http://www.datatrack-labs.co.uk/ Golden rule is not to attempt any further writing to the card. There's still a very good chance that all or at least most of the data can be recovered. A common problem is the controller fails but all the images are still okay. Or if some data cells have gone down, because the controller distributes all image data evenly over multiple cells, there's still a very good chance that a lot of it is still there.
 
Thanks Everyone for your advice gonna do a check on the sd card now!! does anyone know the best way to look after SD card? just bought a Think Tank Retrospective 30, bag the other just so just bought the little Pocket rocket for the SD cards

for some reason it was like 1/3 or them that had lines through and managed to get the best ones off it but just don't want it happening again thanks god i didn't take 100s that day
 
TBH, I've never made any particular effort to look after my CF or SD cards, beyond reformatting them in the cameras when necessary and keeping them in their cases (when I remember to). Haven't had any problems at all, but I agree with the advice to use a number of 4 - 8 Gb cards rather than one 32 or 64 Gb card. Don't put all your eggs in one basket, particularly when the shots are important to you.

Camera is fine with the other cards. I took a number of pictures on all 3 cards and put them on laptop and all 3 sets are fine :S so don't know why that set was corrupted
 
Ive checked all 3 cards and its saying they are fine! when clearly one of them aint!!
 
I fount the file it was one picture that was corrupted. I've formatted the sd card now too so should this be okay to use again now? I'm going to start getting smaller ones too but just don't want to bin it if I don't have to
 
If you've run an extensive test which does a full read/write/verify maybe more than once you should be OK. Good job you didn't listen to the first reply to forget all about your images.

Edit. I'm not sure I would personally trust it with anything really important mind
 
Neither would I. You know.. you just KNOW... that it will let you down when you absolutely need it the most.

Unless it's a very expensive card, I'd just get rid.

Incidentally... if it was just one file, then surely our camera would have been able to read the images, yes?

The pictures where coming up on the camera is that what you meant?
 
When did you last format it before it corrupted? and was it in camera or on laptop and do you format after every download?
Do you take the card out of the camera into a card reader or in built laptop reader to download files or do you use a cable direct from camera to laptop?

If it's a genuine Sandisk card that has gone Pete Tong then Sandisk will replace for free

Yeah.. I meant that. If the first post made that clearer, then I'd have been asking a different set of questions, namely, how did you transfer the images into Lightroom? Your post made it sound as if all files were corrupt when they clearly weren't.

Yesterday was the first time I have formatted it. Should they be formatted a lot more regular then?

And it was in the built in card reader in my laptop. Yeah it's a genuine sandisk card bought it from argos! Lol
 
Its good practice to format it in the camera each time. Just deleting all the files and starting again is much more likely to result in problems like you have experienced

It's because before I fount the corrupt file they all looked like they was.

On lightroom I go to library and just drag the folder over.

I didn't even know I could format the cards in the camera. every post is making me look more stupid lol

Yeah you should find it generally towards the end of the menus in most cameras. You should really only format it in the camera as well as this also minimises problems

Found it, formatted them all in the camera and will start formatting them for now on after use. Thanks

I mean... did you plug the camera into the computer, or use a card reader.
 
LOL.. Doh! Missed that post.

In retrospect, knowing this, and now being informed that there was only actually one file corrupt, and that the camera could read the others.... I suspect the card reader, or perhaps a USB driver having a bad day.
