Help choosing my first tripod please

Ok I think I have narrowed it down to 2 tripods: Manfrotto 190xprob or Giottos 9351B main due to flexibility of the centre column and low minimum height for closeup/macro work. I think a 3 way head would give me the most flexibility for other uses such as movies and maybe panoramas, as I cannot afford more than one head and a geared head of definately out of my budget. I may look second hand. The kit Manfrotto head seems to be the 804RC2 and the Giottos there is only £10 between the MH5011 and MH5001. The Giottos is closer to my budget and really used I cannot afford over £100.

(the cheaper alternatives have a split centre column so I can still get close to the ground such as the velbon sherpa 600R which can be found for about £60 used?)

This will be my first tripod so what would you recommend ? does anyone have experience with both? either?

I should also mention the weight will be a 60D, 60mm macro therefore less working distance and a speedlite.

Have you ever seen the REDSNAPPER tripods, very well built and built to last and at a great price, i have the tri-283 with ballhead and never had any problems with it, and can hold some weight too, comes with padded shoulder bag and 2 x center section (long/short) I also have a redsnapper monopod with ball head which is awesome. Joe who runs redsnapper is a top bloke too and very helpful he gives us tp'ers a 10% discount.

Make your first tripod your only one and you will be happy; either of the two above will do a good job for you.

No point buying a cheaper one today and finding it doesn't do what you want and having to buy another in a few months time.

Many here use the 190XPROB and it is more than adequate for what your needs are.

Got a redsnapper tripod and head for Xmas from the kids - on a bundle deal it was under £60 - the only "problem" being its a little weighty when carried ion the hand (the supplied bag alleviates this) Corking piece of kit, and stands up to a force 8 gale without dumping your kit in the sea
