Having just made the switch to Nikon from Canon im looking to fill a spot in my lens arsenal that was superbly covered by my beloved EF 24-105mm L IS F/4

So whats as good as the Canon beauty, budget wise im happy to spend anywhere from 50p to £750, would like to stcik to Nikon but if there is an obvious 3rd party lens then ill happilt buy that, in not a snob.

Would need something as fast as f/4 or even f/2.8 and would also consider something which flits from f/2.8 - f/4 dependent on focal length, cetrainly nothing any slower than f/4

Also bear in mind in a Nikon Newbie so please be paitent with me.

Would aslo ideally like the lens to be able to be used on a D3 and a D300, im pretty sure this could limit my options but forgive me if im wrong

Not bothered if it means i buy used.

IMHO I'dve looked at the lenses available before making the switch as there is nothing like 24-105mm L IS F/4 in Nikon's line up. Kinda a horse bolted question really!

If you want something around 24-105, then I can suggest the Nikon 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 which is cheap and very good. Yes its not quite f/4 but its close to the range you require.

£750 won't buy you a Nikon full frame lens in the range you require at f/2.8 - f/4.

The Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is excellent.

what about this lens http://www.martinscamerashop.co.uk/nikon-af-s-24-120mm-vr-f35-56-g-if-56-p.asp is it any good, i can get this for £250

Hi Gary, the 24-120 has the reputation of being one of Nikons poorest lenses. It is supposedly soft throughout the zoom range and at most apertures (even stopped down) it is also f3.5 - 5.6 which is slower than you were asking for anyway :thinking:

Puddleducks suggestion for the Tamron sounds a good option, if that would give you enough reach. The IQ is first rate on the copy I borrowed from a mate :)

Hi Gary
The 24-85 has a reasonable rating.
I myself am trying to get hold of a Tamron SP 24-135 which is highly rated (9 on Fred Miranda).

I'm with puddleduck.. with amazing bodies like the d3 and d300.. you don't want to compromise by putting something average on it. To be honest, it'd be better to downgrade the bodies to finance the better/best lenses. Even just downgrading the d3 would afford you some great glass.

Thanks guys, coming from Canon im not yet 100% sure of what is quality glass but youre helping me get there

Absolutely.

I hope you weren't planning on asking us about the Nikon equivalents to the following Canon lenses:
* 17-40mm f/4 L
* 24mm f/1.4 L
* 35mm f/1.4 L
* 50mm f/1.2 L
* 85mm f/1.2 L
* 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS
* 300mm f/4 L IS
* 400mm f/5.6 L
Because you'll get a similar answer.

Nah, i knew Nikon had a poorer range than Canon before i switched

Im OK with a 300 f/2.8 and a 70-200 f/2.8 as those are just straight replacements from my canon gear (well almost, i owned a 400mm) and was just needing something to sit in the wide/mid zoom range

None of the lenses you listed above ever interested my shooting style (field sports, Rugby, Footy and Cricket) other than the 17-40 which i once owned but traded for a 24-105

gary,

can i ask what made you change over to nikon, as im half tempted to go canon for the lens range alone.

Not on a public message forun you cant, if you seriously want to know and have a spare week or 2 then drop me a PM and ill get round to it.
