Hi everyone.

I have a Fuji Finepix A500, as a carry everywhere compact, but it if showing a message in the display window.
A Red box with bold white lettering - CARD NOT INITIALIZED - and it won't let me take any pics.
I have tried formatting the card with no success, so presumed the card had packed up, so bought another card but still get the same message.Any help or advice will be gratefully accepted.

Many thanks,
Andy.

Now I know you are not supposed to do this normally, but with the old card, try formatting it in you computer. Opt for the FAT 16 option. This will tell you if the card is formatable.

If it is try putting it back into the camera and see what happens when you try an initialise it again.

If youre getting the same message with a new card, I'd point right at the camera unfortunately.

Clappers.
Tried that, only had a FAT 32 or a FAT option.
"Could not format disk", then "Windows was unable to format disk" pop up windows appeared.

Marcel.
I am afraid that that was my gut instinct, backed up by the above :(

Is the card capacity too big for that camera?

and is it a type M card or type H? looks like 1GB cards are the max.

From the manual -

There are two types of
xD-Picture Card: standard type

and Type M (containing “M” in the model number, such as
DPC-M1GB).
FinePix A400/FinePix A500 are compatible with Type M,
however they may not be compatible depending on the

device used (Image Memory Card Reader, etc.).

Use the following
xD-Picture Cards:

16MB/32MB/64MB/128MB/256MB/512MB/1GB

Did you format the card in camera in playback mode?

:(

FAT is FAT 16 if my memory serves. However the fact that windows failed to format the card, does tend to point to it being the card. Strange though new card failed as well

I agree and it's certainly odd.

Unless the camera is doing something to the cards to render them unformattable?

Get another (cheap) card. Check it works on the PC first, then try it in the camera.
