Question re:
Canon ef 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM telephoto zoom lens OR
Canon ef 70-200 f/4L IS USM lens

I am shooting horse events inside and out inside tends to be a bit low on light. Need to replace a 28-200 I have had for years as it does not cut it for these events
I just bought a 120-300 that is just to big to pan with for me and I need to basically replace the lens I have for my primary lens for the moment at least. So this lens is going back sadly.

I've owned both, the f4 is a lovely lens to use, lightweight and produces brilliantly sharp images. But and it's a big but, onces the light drops off will it allow you a fast enough shutter speed? I shoot footy under floodlights and have just upgraded to the 2.8 mkII and obviously it allows that extra stop of light.

But there are payoffs. The 2.8 is a very heavy beast compared to the f4 mind you compared to the 120-300 I would imagine this would seem lightweight!

I'm still playing around with the mk II. At the moment, it I didn't need the extra stop of light I'd go with the f4 without a moments hesitation. I was gutted to have sold mine on, in an ideal world I'd have both!

The f/4 IS is a great lens but the image quality is nowhere near the f/2.8 II

I must have had a really good one then, because mine was superb.
