Hi

Got myself an ex demo Canon 5D last wekend...lovely camera. I had previously had a 400D so already had the EOS Utility and DPP software loaded(but a later edition V13.1, V11 came with 5D).

So for the first week i had been using my exsisting version software the 5D with no problems, then two days ago i'm uploading some photos, realised i needed 2 more so disconnected the camera, took the photos and now nothings working.

When connected to my laptop the red light flashes on the 5D just once then nothing, the camera doesn't say "BUSY" (in fact i can still take photos :(), i'm not given the option to download any photos from EOS Utility (all the options are greyed out). If i do a search through my computer the camera doesn't show as a device.

Have tried my hubbys laptop - i get exactly the same.

I've tried the CF card in my 400d and uploaded them, there are no problems.....

have i done something awful???? Does anyone know how to sort it?

Many thanks

Anna

Did you pull out the cable from the camera while the photos were being uploaded?

Did you pull out the cable from the camera while the photos were being uploaded?

No, the photos had finished uploading. I turned the camera off and took the cable out the camera..

I'm not sure what else to suggest. Try swapping the CF cards and the batteries and trying again. When you connected it to your husbands PC did it show up on the desktop as an icon or anything? Even as a hard drive?

No nothing, its like suddenly the camera has decided not to "talk".

I don't get it as it was working fine for a week and i haven't done anything unsual other than turn the camera off immediately after the first upload.

When you first connect the camera to the computer is it turned off, turning it on only after it's physically connected? I've not experienced this with my mkII so I'm kinda clutching at straws here.

Yep, connect cable first then turn on camera. Think i may have fried it somehow:(

Thanks anyway!

Just use a card reader (as above). Easier and it doesn't drain the camera battery.

The Canon software that you have for your 400D doesn't recognise the 5D. I hade the same problem when shooting tethered when I switched from my 20D.I had to load the 5D software before the computer would see the 5D

Either use a card reader, which I would say is the better option, or go to the canon web site and upgrade the software. If you can get the 5D disks it would help in the future

Thanks everyone.

Chappers downloaded the software from Canon - still no 5D:(

Regarding the card reader- i'm sure this will work but the camera was purchased "as new" with full warranty, I want to make sure the camera is 100% so that when i want to upgrade in the future i can sell this on with no problems.

I've emailed London Camera Exchange (where it was bought) and will see what they say.....Why does everything have to be so complicated:shrug:

have you tried resetting the usb port association on the PC?

Go to the control panal, settings, device manger - look for USB for canon and then delete /remove

restart then connect.

Worth a go ;)

Hi Cressers

My computer is different (maybe cause its windows XP?? i'm crap...) - can go to control panal, then choose "Scanners & Cameras" but theres nothing there to delete?

Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
Double-click System, and then click the Device Manager tab.

Have a look at the USB Hardware and see if there are any warning signs. If you see something that is called Canon associated with any of the the USB ports, try removing it (right click - delete /remove)

restart

Plug in camera

Steffyboy -i've tried 2 cables....

Cressers - cheers, finally found it but nothing under there to do with Canon, even when camera is connected and turned on.

Have a feeling theres something wrong with the camera. It was a demo so it may have been abused!

Will speak to them tomorrow. Thanks everyone for trying to help :)

have you tried uninstalling the canon software that was already on your PC and reinstalling via the discs that came with the 5D

Hi Wack61 - unfortuantely the 5D disc doesn't work. Downloaded it from the Canon site - still no good.

Spoke to shop they reckon it should show as an external device regardless of if there is any software installed....so its back to the shop for my new baby:'(
