Help buying a tripod

You need not take the center column out completely for it to be used in its 0-180 degree positions. Just press in the button near the columns bottom on the side assuming the lever is in open position. The column if then positioned and locked at any degree between 0-180. Secondly if you do decide to take the column fully out it can be re-inserted upside down and then raised & lowered as normal.
 
There is a small chrome double prong on the small tool I use when swung out to tighten the quick release plate.
