Yes
My main editing computer is not booting properly.
When switched on it goes to the AMD mother board logo and then stops.
Switching on and off with the windows 7 disc in it boots some times
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Any symptoms previously, or did you just install anything?
There has been a big windows7 update the last day or two.
You could try a system restore from safe mode if that works.
Could you do a repair since you have the disc?

Possibly a dead onboard BIOS battery if it always boots to the BIOS screen. Normally they are simple CR cells that take 10 seconds to change.

It has been doing it for a few weeks now sometimes ok and then It will not boot until it has been switch off and on a few times

I an sure that it is not a windows problem as such because the start up is not getting to the start windows stage with or with out the windows disc in

Change the BIOS battery then.

If its the bios battery you'll see a check sum error on boot.
When booting how many beeps does it make at end of post? This will indicate if there is a hardware fault.
If only one beep then hardware appears OK.
Try pressing f8 as it boots to get into boot options, then choose last known good configuration, if that doesn't work, then try safe mode.
Could be your hdd is on its way out.

Post up exactly what happens; n boot, beeps error messages, where it freezes etc

You could also go into bios and reset bus to default settings to see if it helps, see if it has detected hdd as well

Thanks for the help,
The problem may well be bios battery because
1 it is before any windows software gets a chance to start
2 the boot fail is from hdd and cd drive
I will change the battery over the week end and hope

If you need a new battery, you should see the error that Steve mentioned?

The BIOS will be at the wrong date etc.etc.

You should also reset the BIOS too. There will be a jumper on the board somewhere to do this.

You did keep the manual didn't you ;)

Not always. I had a failed battery that just dumped me into the BIOS. No error message... The clock was reset, but...

Do you own a fluke?
If so you can test the battery, if its a cr2032 it should have 3v.

If you have a boot cd, try booting to that.
If it boots it isn't your bios battery

You haven't left a USB flash drive plugged in by any chance, have you? That will often cause your computer to hang on boot.

If it was the battery gone, you would have seen a loss of settings before now. They wouldn't just return and let you boost occasionally without setting the bios up again.

Can you list your complete spec? Hard disk making any noises? I'm from Peterborough originally, not home for a few weeks or I could have helped you face to face.
