I'm trying to decide between 2 names and I'm stuck on which one to choose...

My original photography name was:

JayX2A photography

That name came from my Xbox gamer tag lol - my initials are JJA so it was a spin of that - Jay x 2 A (if that makes sense).

I then thought it was a bit tacky and read some blurb online that as you are the photographer any future clients would be hiring you so it's a good idea to use your own name. So that became...

Justin Akehurst photography

For some reason, after using this for a bit, I'm sort of liking the 1st one more. Not sure why, maybe it's a bit more original, but then using my name makes sense.

So what does everyone prefer? I know at the end of the day it's my choice, but any opinions would help as can't decide!! I did consider photographic instead, but not sure I like that word so much.

The second one. The first one isn't as easy to remember, and it sounds like a cheap private number plate :p and no-one will know how to say it: Jay ex two ay, jay times two ay, Jay multiplied by two ay, etc, etc

I think 'JJ Akehurst Photography' may work better, not totally formal, but also professional. I personally feel the one derived from the xbox gamertag is a little childish and the origin of it supports that.

Thank you.

Feedback and suggestions like this is just what I need.

Gives me more to decide between too!

Here's my take on it. Names which help customers or potential customers find your website, even if they can't remember the exact name or spelling, are good. That's why I call my business 'Lenses For Hire'. It might be dull but it works.

Justin Akehurst fits this bill. Justin is not a common name, and it's easy to spell. Akehurst is unusual but is spelt pretty much how it sounds. So anyone who knows your name would be able to find you.

JJ Akehurst also works, though perhaps slightly less well because it's dependent on the surname only. Still, as has been suggested here it might be perceived as slightly classier, and that might tip the scales in its favour.

JayX2A doesn't work at all in this way. For starters you have to spell it out to everyone - "no, not just J, it's J, A, Y, and it's the digit 2" etc - and if they forget any if it then Google isn't likely to help them. Plus, as I've just discovered, if they do successfully type JayX2A it's likely to be changed to something else by the autocorrect function.

X-BOX wnj454ffn - or who you are? Easy!

But does it need the appellation 'photography'? I only ask because thousands of aspirants as well as practitioners are using the term, gratuitous watermarks and other forms of hopeful branding are rampant, and I suspect that half of them haven't a clue what they're up to. So why not just be you (your name)? Your purpose would be clear in your promotional material anyway? Keep it simple, keep it personal, keep it tight, keep it clean.

Thank you everyone, very helpful

Well said.

Perfect and says it all.

How about 'JJA Photography'? If this name isn't already taken, it's easy to remember (and spell!) and sounds a bit more 'corporate' than an individual person's name. It depends on your intended market though, if you are catering more for business/corporate type photos then JJA Photography might sound better, if you are going for the portrait or wedding photo type market then 'J J Akehurst Photography' sounds a bit more 'arty' and traditional.

However, these days your choice of company name might also depend on what's available e-mail address and Limited Company name wise too. Hope this is useful.
