Me and Darren haven't been on holiday together yet, and its getting to the point where we just want a long weekend away somewhere. I would love to go abroad, but we really cant justify the cost, so we've decided to go somewhere in the UK. He cant make a decision about anything, so its up to me again :D

I was thinking Stratford Upon Avon, its only about 50 miles away, and they have some gorgeous 4* hotels. Has anyone been there? Or would anyone highly recommend somewhere else?

We've only ever stayed in Premier Travel Inns (romantic I know ;)), so would love somewhere set in gardens, or with a swimming pool or something.

Dont worry, I am not asking anyone to holiday hunt for me, but would feel better if anyone recommends somewhere :)
 
Dee we stayed here for out 10th Anniversary and combined it with a balloon trip

Its a gorgeous location and a lovely hotel (that was in 1991 so things may have changed) but as a central point to tour round the Cotswolds its great!

Betty, I go to Stratford every few weeks, and I do love the place.
However, the town its self isnt very big and gets extremely overcrowded with tourists at the weekend at this time of year (personally, I dont mind).
Apart from eating out, (expensive)
taking in a play, (depends whats on)
and visting old Shakey's house (which is small and youre done in no time),
there's also Anne Hathaway's cottage which is just outside town, there isnt too much to do in the centre its self... though a balloon trip would make a fantastic highlight to the weekend!

I guess it depends what you want from the weekend really, personally I love ambling round quaint old towns.
I also enjoy places like Ludlow & Chester too.
 
Same here Glo, I went to Lincoln years ago, and fell in love with the old cobbled streets :) We went to Chester last year, so Ill scratch that one off the list for now.

We dont have to go on a weekend, can be a Thursday - Friday to avoid the mad rush!

I know it's a bit further away but it is a damm good place to base yourselves for a weekend as there is so much stuff in the area, I am on about Northumberland. Hotel details underneath.
I have stayed in this hotel a couple of times when I have been back up in the north east. They do a mean breakfast, and the onsite restauraunt is top notch. I would also recoment the Oak Inn at Causey Park up the A1 about 6-8 miles north of Morpeth.

We stayed there in one of the stable chalet type things a couple of years back for a wedding and found it very reasonable and we explored the IOW

We went on the Wednesday and came back the Sunday. Spent 3 days driving round the island going to Vineyards, garlic farms etc - plenty of photo opportunities as well :D
 
Thanks for the links everyone, I am happy spending a little more on a nice hotel seeing as we've never really splashed out on a hotel before. Be nice to treat ourselves :)
 
I certainly have considered York! Went there years ago and loved it, thanks for the extra links :thumbs:
 
Ignored by the rest of the country, and its tourists. If you base yourself at or near Ludlow you have:

- Ludlow (medieval market town, ruined castle and 2nd foodie capital of Britain),
- Much Wenlock (medieval market town with ruined priory)
- Shrewsbury (medieval city)
- Ironbridge (early industrial revolution)
- Hereford (medieval cathedral city)
- Hay on Wye (booktown on the border)
- Herefordshire's black and white village trail
- Offa's Dyke
- Severn Valley Railway (steam )
- landscapes coming out of your ears, such as the Teme Valley, the Severn Valley, the border around Knighton, Clun, Hay on Wye, Long Mynd and the Stiperstones etc.

All within reach as day or half-day trips.

Just bear in mind that parking in Ludlow is a b****r these days - Shropshire County Council want everyone to park outside and use the park and ride. It's slowly strangling one of the best small towns in the country.
 
Centre Parcs...? Not a million miles away from you but self catering. Or Maybe Thorsby Hall which is a Warner Hoteland adults only.

betty - ditch darren and come with me to tenerife for week - i'll just make an excuse to the wife :p;)

on a more serious note, what about gonig rural, stay a nice ledge somewhere in the peaks/lakedistrict/black mountains etc....
