help!!! ben really let down by IT person

long story short...

local IT guru, who I've never had a complaint about before (except maybe the speed of response when in trouble ;) ) has let me down...

just gone from a windows based laptop to macbook pro, so huge learning curve for me (and I've got the one to one with apple) and he promised to re-do my email (I have 3 www's but don't use them as wwws, just as email addys etc)

so, for the last month, I've been texting him, phoning him and FBing him... to no avail :( I'm now stuck with a laptop on it's last legs and no way to get my email (who I thought was hosted by 1and1, but isn't!) onto the mac... not even the mac geniuses can help me, and just rolled their eyes and said they knew of the chap I'd used :(

How on earth can I set up my email onto the mac without the person who set it up's input, or how can I find out where my emails are hosted and get them to a place I can control them?

I'm NOT IT literate in any way, and I'm not really good at following instructions (as they often assume you have some degree of knowledge, which sadly I don't) unless they're in simpletons format (scott kelby type works for me, so that tells you how good I am!:cry:)

can anyone point me in the right direction, please?
 
I can probably help with this.

First thing is to find out where your mail is hosted. You'll need to let me know the domain names. If you don't want them publicly revealed then feel free to PM me and we can take it from there.
 
Are you using outlook on your old pc laptop and do you download the email to your laptop? If so then all your email is in a .pst file and you could copy that over. Not sure if there is an outlook for mac (it's part of office and you do get office for mac) but you could run it under parallels ( windows virtual machine for mac).
depending on what you want to run on the mac, there are converter program's as well.

If you just access it via a browser then that should be easy to find and move.
 
thanks Byker28i, but none of what you've said means anything to me :( at the moment steve is attempting to access my hosting accounts, which may be held by the it person who has let me down.
hoping for some good news, but I have a bit of a bad feeling about it all.

You'll need the server details with username and password to set it all up.

Outlook/entourage for mac is available albeit not free. But depends how your email is set up as to whether you need to export and import it.

OK, not a problem,
I was going to explain that I have a system setup where I could dial into computers as long as the following is understood - I would require the other person to change the password AND disable the dial in capability when I had checked to see if I could assist. This would remove the possibility that I could dial in again unless they allowed it.

I am a Microsoft Certified Professional and can provide identification for people prior to them deciding if they want me to help.

I would only check what is requested of me and if they do not want me to fix I would leave their PC as it was and give them instructions on how to remove the dial in capability.

This information is available if you search on Google for dial in capability, the reason I was offering is that although many people may be able to set up and use the dial in capability, there are not as many who know the operating systems inside out.

I am quite happy for people to refuse to allow me access, as I understand that some people have reservations about this type of assistance; if that is the case then I would recommend they go to a good local computer specialist - however this will then cost them whereas if I assist over the web I would not charge for a quick fix.

The issue is that she doesn't know her login details for her email accounts, and the only person who does has let her down.

So the only thing of any relevance to be shared would be: Make sure you know your email settings, and if those settings are only known by the person who set things up for you, make damned sure they're not going to disappear overnight.

The OP might was sharing specific details of her email accounts and domains to those who offered to help.

I doubt she'd have wanted to post such information on an open forum, but if that breaks the forum rules then I apologise.

Don't worry it wasn't aimed at you and I certainly wasnt suggesting posting sensitive details
