Home/Office network comprises:-

  • Dell XPS Laptop in the lounge with wireless connection to Virgin Superhub (also in the lounge).
  • 2 x Dell Desktops with attached USB printers in office with ethernet connection via pair of Home Network Plugs from Splitter to Virgin Superhub.
  • 2 x NAS units in office with ethernet connection to Splitter.

On going away on holiday all office equipment and the Virgin Superhub were switched off.

Holiday accommodation had a BT Internet connection (not sure which type but not mega-fast) and laptop did not immediately connect to it so had to run a wizard (!) to get it to see and use the wireless - spent the 2 weeks without issues using the holiday wi-fi.

On return home the Laptop immediately connected to the Virgin Superhub and Internet, however it will not access any of the office PC's, printers or NAS units - PC's can connect to NAS units, Virgin Superhub and Internet!
From the Laptop I can ping the office PC's and NAS but I cannot ping the Laptop from the office PC's.

I have tried disabling the Kaspersky firewall (Laptop tried and one of the PC's tried) but it makes no difference.
I am assuming that connecting to the holiday wi-fi has in some way made a change to the Laptop that is now causing issues with it connecting to the rest of my Home/Office network ... but I don't know what.

Any help on resolving this irritation would be much appreciated.

I should know the answer to that but I don't, neither can I remember how to find out - Win 7 on Laptop Win XP on the others.

ipconfig/all shows DCHP enabled on the Win 7 Laptop but not enabled on the 2 x Win XP desktops.

Last time I saw something like this, it was the subnets the PCs were on that caused the problems.

Start->cmd
then

ipconfig /all

on the XPS and the desktops please...

Can't see it being a dhcp issue since the laptop can ping your other devices so it must be receiving an ip address from your superhub...

If you run an ipconfig /all on your laptop and then run the same command on one of your PC's what do you see in the fields "IP Address", "Subnet Mask", "Default Gateway" & "DHCP Server"?

Also, from your laptop can you try removing your home wifi connection and then rejoin to it?

If you goto "Network & Sharing Center">"Manage Wireless Networks">Right click on your home network & click "Remove Network"

Dell XPS

Dell Desktop 2 (1 is similar)

Check the firewall in Kaspersky. Make sure the adaptor connected to your network says trusted network next to it and not public. On public it will let you use the internet but block all local browsing.

Edit - saw you disabled kaspersky. You get a little box pop up when you do telling you it will disable the network unless you say not to (i think)..

Its not a subnet issue then since both devices are using the same mask

Good Point from Robertp regarding network profiles. If you could try removing the wifi network from your laptop and when you rejoin the network it will prompt you to choose a public, private or work profile for your laptop. Choose Home....

Also, when you run your pings are you pinging the name of the device or the ip address?

Yes its configured as a trusted network.

I am pinging the IP addresses - successfully from laptop to others but unsuccessfully from others to laptop.

Cautious about removing the wi-fi network from the laptop as I have a history of losing connection then having loads of hassle getting it back again :(

Got an ethernet cable?

Try disabling the wireless on the laptop in device manager or keyboard switch if there is one and connecting by a cable instead.

Might narrow it down to the wireless adaptor.

Ok removed wi-fi network and then re-connected (no hassle :) ) but I got no prompt.

Don't have an ethernet cable ATM, just checked the wi-fi network and it is set to Home.

I'm thinking that this has to be a change made when I connected to the holiday wi-fi.

Can you check that Windows Firewall hasn't been mysteriously enabled on your laptop?

Well off to bed :D
Any suggestions overnight appreciated

At this stage you probably can't rule malware being an issue......

Try a good old fashioned reboot; It's amazing how many bugs are fixed by doing this lol!

you could try ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew which will release your laptops current ip address and request a new one from your superhub

Are you pinging by name or ip?

Also turn ipv6 off if you're not using it, had issues in the past with it causing issues. With it off its just one less thing to go wrong.

Pinging by IP - I've switched ipv6 off but no change.

Switched off 'Obtain IP Address Automatically' on laptop and changed to specific addresses and voila :D

Thanks to all for help offered - much appreciated :)

Gramps, one problem though with configuring static settings on your wireless adaptor is that your laptop will only work on a network that is configured in exactly the same way as your home network.

So you may find that if you use it elsewhere you won't be able to connect to that network unless you check "Configure Settings Automatically"

Thanks Ashley ... I'm thinking that the laptop is probably only going to be taken out like this once a year at most and now that I know what is happening I am better placed to deal with it if it happens again :)
