Hello all,
new to forums but hoping to help and be helped.
I'm bursting with questions and hope someone can help.

What will the difference be between shooting on 28mm with a 28-70mm zoom or a 28mm fixed lens,
if i am shooting 10 people in a line? Will i distort the people? or will the sharpness be considerably less?
Hope someone can help.

You cant beat a prime lens for sharpness (ie the 28mm lens) although some of the 28-75 range are pretty damn good if you pay over £200 or so.

Do you mean 10 people in a line all the same distance from you,.,, or a line stretching away from you? If they are stretching away from you then the depth of field comes into play and that depends what aperture you use.

welcome Mart, you might get a more complete reply if you post in the Equipment forum

Hi Janice, thanks for your reply.
yep a line directly in front not stretching away. I recently shot some line ups with a 28-70mm nikkon but wasn't happy with the shapeness and wasnt sure if i made the people on the ends fat.

Hello Mart - welcome aboard. 28mm is quite a moderate wide angle lens and on a 1.6 crop sensor camera the field of view is only about an effective 44mm anyway, so you shouldn't have too many problems.

All wide angle lenses do distort though to a degree, the wider the lens the more distortion. Distortion isn't usually a problem at moderate distances it's when you start to move in very close that distortion really starts to show up although many people use this distortion to good effect in their shots.

If you get too close to a line of people with a WA lens then the group start to fan out from the centre, and the people on each end can appear to falling over, so that's something to watch for.

The only real difference between a fixed 28mm (prime lens) and a 28mm zoom lens is that prime lenses tend to have the edge for sharpness.

Hope that helps mate. :)
