Help a beginner!

Sorry, this has sort of been posted within another thread elsewhere on the forum, but someone recommended me this to get started with a DIY lighting setup

I'm looking to start a few portrait shoots, home visits and that sort of thing. Is this enough to get me started WITHOUT the need for additional external flash? Would I just plug it in, adjust the settings and shoot away (after buying some interchangeable backgrounds)? My concern is my D60 doesn't allow for wireless flash control, so all I've got at the moment is a SB-400 mounted to the body, I want a simple set up to get me started but it has to be fully portable and as cheap as possible, yet suitable for good results.

Yes, that will get you started - but be prepared to buy some additional light modifiers, because what is included will only produce (reasonably) soft lighting. On that subject, I'm not certain but I believe that that particular kit has a non-standard accessory fitting, so the range of accessories may be limited.

The modelling lamps are also pretty dim and you may run into problems with colour temperature and output consistency. Having said that, I'm sure that there are plenty of satisfied users.

Hmmm, so I will probably need to add to this? I just want some kit that will start me off, produce good enough lighting for in house portrait shots without added costs elsewhere. If there's anything else that could help even for a bit more outlay I'd be interested to know about it.

That will get you started certainly, but you might find that you will need to add to it very quickly. The output is not great on them either.

Look around at possibly even used kits....just don't go mad!! Ebay has some good buys on it as well. Try ffordes sometimes.

The Proline Apollo set ups are good (just happen to be selling one lol) but it's on eBay.

Have a look around anyway, the Interfit is a decent enough wee kit.

Your D60 will allow for wireless flash if you put a transmitter on it and a receiver on the light etc. Can be bought for about a fiver on ebay

Thanks, I know absolutely nothing about lighting so any other alternatives, especially for second hand stuff, are more than welcome.

I didn't know that re the wireless flash, but an SB-600 would cost me more than that whole Jessops set up anyway.

That's right Garry, they use interfit's own fitting, I think it's called the 'EX Fitting'.

The problem is I only have a budget of £300 max, and this will be taken up with a SB-600, plus I wouldn't then be able to use my SB-400.
