Help! 24-70 or 24-105??

Hello

I am intending on buying a canon 5D when/if the prices ever come down!! The problem i have is my budget will only allow me one lens. I intend to use my purchase to take portraits and the odd landscape, architecture photo's.

Image quality is of paramount importance to me, which is why intend to buy primarily L glass,( with the exception of a 50mm 1.4 prime), next year I will more than likely buy the 70-200 f2.8L is usm.

At the moment though I want to get either the 24-70mm f2.8L usm or the 24-105mm f4L is usm.

The f2.8 vs IS Question is burning a hole in my head. :thinking: so i was wondring what you guys would recommend, remembering that I'm after the best IQ for my money???????????? :shrug:

Your help would be appreciated

Great lenses, I want to get my hands on one of them soon, and it will probably be the 24-70 f/2.8 for me.

It really depends if you want the better background blur with slightly better low-light capabilities or a longer range.

For portraits, landscape and architecture i'd probably say the 24-105 would suit your needs fine. It's also cheaper than the 24-70.

The IQ for both is very similar, they are just for slightly different purposes.

Oh and also remember that the 24-105 is the kit lens for the 5D so you will be able to get it bundled with the body for a better price :)

Well I bought the 24-105 when I purchased my 5D as I thought it was the best combination for Wedding Photography. I few months into the Wedding season with wet days and indoor shots, I was not very impressed with the IQ in low light. I then bought the 24-70 2.8 and wow! best move ever. I think it is horses for courses.

Depends on your photography style and work. For me, it is the best combination and where the 70mm ends, my 70-200 2.8IS takes over.

I'm absolutely 100% with Gilly. I have the 24-105mm that I bought with the 5D and in a studio, it's great. As a walkabout lens, it's hardly off the camera.

But.....

It's honestly not the best in low light. The 24-70mm beats it all ends up in low light.

Then there is the crossover. If you plan on getting a 70-200mm next year it may be worth putting up with the shorter 24-70mm in the meantime.

If I were in your shoes, I'd be trying them both on a 5D at your nearest store. That will help you make up your mind (hopefully)
 
I have had two copies of the 24-70L ( sold the first when I ran out of cash) Fast sharp and a usfull focal length on my 1.6 crop body
