Help, 21st party on sat

right its my fiances 21st on sat, as usual i cant leave my camera at home so im taking it with me (Nikon D40 18-55 lens)

what would be the best settings to use

im guessing light will be limited. i have a flash gun but i dont think i can adust the amount of flash (plus dont really want to be blinding everyone )

Shoot in RAW!

What's your flash? If it's a simple thyristor type set your aperture according to the guide on the flash and see if the results are OK. If not, adjust and repeat.

If your flash can swivel and tilt, try aiming it at a white ceiling or wall and get an idea of what exposure compensation is required. You might prefer to use a simple white card attached with an elastic band and the flash pointed not quite straight up, so you get a mix of light bounced from the ceiling and forward from the card.

You could set the shutter speed to 1/60 and the aperture to f/5.6 or a bit narrower and then adjust the ISO to allow the ambient light to register as well as the flash. Ideally you'd use an orange filter on the flash and the tungsten or a custom white balance.

its just a cheap flash of ebay (its actually my fiances so i wil be borrowing it off him)

if you can get hold of a prime lens for the nikon, something around 50mm with a low apature they are great for partys

i shot my sisters 21st using the canon nifty 50.

no flash required, But the last party I went to, I could not find the 50, so used the Kit lens on 18-55 with flash set at 1/8th power, with the lambincy difuser.
