I ordered two D850's from the first delivery. I cancelled the
order because no software was supporting it. Capture One
was the first to support it… within days!

The second batch just arrived but could get hold only of one
of the two ordered. Now, the problem is I can't get the right
stuff to get files to the computer… got cards but no reader.

I would like help to find the following:

Lexar Four-bay Thunderbolt™ 2/USB 3.0 reader hub with

CF module
SDXC II module
XQD module.

Get them while you can as this system has been officially discontinued (wish I'd have kept mine when I had the CF/ SD bays, I could have then just added the XQD unit to make a stack for all the card types I use) :-(

Is this it?

Yes, that's the bay… I can get that too but I'm
contemplating the whole kit as described!

Tx, Richard!

Hindsight eh ?

I've had a quick hunt around the 'tinernet, and it seems that most of the card bays are available still (CF Fast, CF, SDXC, USB hub etc) but the XQD seems to be out of stock and discontinued everywhere.

£149 !!! ... simple USB XQD reader is around £24.

I don't know but doesn't the D850 have any USB ports in the body anyway. I see it had bluetooth connectivity

An immediate solution would be a Thunderbolt reader
for SDXC II.

This morning, I spent an hour at the marsh knowing that
I can't see the pictures!

Whats the difference between a session and a libraray?
A session is within a folder containing all sidecar files
and is managed by the operator.
A library is imported pictures managed by a software.
Can you not do this in CO?
CO can import libraries from Lr ie. but I would never
consider these libraries in my workflow as they may
get corrupted and not compatible with my approach
to archiving my images.

Absolutely legitimate!
All kinds of tools and all kind of ways
to use them!

I like the idea of capture one, a lot. Never gelled with LR and still use Apeture 3 but worry its getting outdated, slow as its not designed for the OS I use so need to move my RAW converter. I really am not that keen on LR so it seems the alternative. You are the only one I know of who uses it, will it work for me in this way. As a tool for editing I am confident it will exceed aperture 3, but not sure on the file management.

You thought you were at the cutting edge of technology but now find you are at the bleeding edge ;-) .... Sorry! :exit:

I wonder if shutter sound varies with the lens on the camera? You would think a 600mm cannon would damp the sound but maybe it acts as a sounding board and amplifies it?

In any cases, that would mean to haul a laptop to the marsh… most inconvenient.
Surely if you (when you get home) you attach the D850 to your laptop using the USB 3.0 cable supplied in the box the laptop sees the camera and the contents of the card - same as (though possibly slower than) if you put the card into a standard reader.

Works that way with the D750 iirc.

I have a friend teaching multi-media at the Johaneum University
in Graz, and I went for a coffee with him this morning to tell him
all about the recent developments and unpleasant experience.
Robert is really a resourceful person and has been my guru in IT
matters for years.

His verdict? —"I know you said your MacPro is working per-
fectly but this is typical MAC: they outdate well before they fail in
any way. You could upgrade some of the hardware but that can
only be short term solution; buy a new one! This option will cost
just a bit more but will solve mid and long terms problems —that
is if one may talk in those terms when it comes to technologies."

So we were on the Apple web store to look what is available. A
very new iMAC Pro will come this month on the market but the
super high performance monster is designed, as he said, for mas-
sive video productions… as he does.

After some clever guidance from his part, I decided to go for an
IMac configured like this… making the move to the D850 costing
Kodiak Photography at least double of what I calculated… what
will one not do to stay on top?

Expensive upgrade, I hope the D850 is worth that much over the D810!
Mind you MAC are always expensive for what you get, PC would have saved a chunk of cash. :)

…and PCs are too unreliable for what you save! :(

Too many said "never again"! So when I moved to
digital, it had to be Mac! :D

Not in my experience Daniel. :)

I guess, Roger, it boils down to how heavy is the use one
makes of a machine(s).

In my operations, the days when my Macs (4) were down,
in all machines, count to 6 in the last ten years and were
not out for more than half a day. I must rely on my machi-
nes… they are the ones that really bring the bread home.

That upgrade....Eeeeeeek!:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Why that stupefaction?

If nothing happens and the iMac performs as well as the MacPro
did, I calculate 3,248$ in ten years = 324,80 per annum… cheap
for piece of mind! :D

… and the beauty and stability of the OS is second to none! :)

Been using my Dell without interruption since before 2003, normally on and in use every day. :)

Right, some have no complaint with higher end PCs. Nevertheless,
you're will be facing the same difficulties when it comes to inetrcon-
nectivity with the newer technologies.

Someone is whispering over my shoulder: "what is a bug on Mac OS
is a feature on Windows!!! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::wacky:

Never had problems with connectivity to the equipment I use either Daniel.
Your 'over-the-shoulder' voice is correct, whereas Windows allows the use of many features Apple hamstrings its products ... well as you have discovered, at great cost!

But this is classic survivorship bias.
