Hi everyone, the names Bubbles (or Erin). I've had a camera for maybe a year? It's a second hand Kodak pixpro... I don't know if that's the correct model. I'm an amateur at photography, but I love taking pics of wildlife. I have some nice photos from the mouth of the River Otter. I'm happy to be here, thanks to Tori_T for telling me about this place!

Hi Erin, i'm in East Devon, you must be close if you are making images at the mouth of the Otter. Welcome to the forum, you'll find loads of brilliant info (and members) here. Don't be afraid to ask questions, people are always willing to help. What sort of proficiency would you say you are?

Not that good! I can post some of my work when the spam thingy is verified.

Hi Erin

Welcome to TP :)

As Jim @FlyPhot says lots of members here at TP, including many novices/beginners......................actually with photography every day can be "a school day". (note ~ there is a Beginners section)

So, post away as you wish with questions, comments and photos either just for pleasure of/about the photo & what inspired you to take it, or if you are looking for constructive feedback either post in the section as appropriate or perhaps state that you wish for for more in depth feedback.

Just remember there is no such thing as stupid question, everyone has start somewhere!

Thank you!

I don't have the greatest cam ever but it's an awesome one. Isn't photography more about the skill and patience?

The camera doesn't make the image, it just records what's in front of it. The photographer makes the image, composes the image and tells the camera how to handle the light (this is a really simplistic description that others may well disagree with). A good photographer will be able to get a good image with even a basic camera (dynamic range and a mix of other things may not be brilliant, but that's down to the capability of the camera rather than the capability of the photographer).

Patience, yes indeed - waiting for the light to be just right in a landscape, waiting for the right person to walk into a shot in street photography etc etc etc. But it's also about practice, practice, practice.

Have you had any 'lessons' at all?

No, not at all. xP

Well, if you're in the East Devon area i'm happy to meet up and take you through some basics. But there are also lots of great resources online. I'd start by having a look at Mike Browne on YouTube, his videos are excellent and a great place to start - here's a link to his channel Mike Browne. There is lots of stuff on there so don't be overwhelmed - I'd start with the 'Camera Controls' section, which takes you through step by step explaining what the controls do and how they change what the camera 'sees' (it's much more technical than that but, to me, it works as an explanation here ;) )

Thanks for the offer, but I'd prefer to stick online for now. Since I've made more than three posts, here is my favourite pic, some sand pipers. I don't actually have a tripod because when me and my Dad went online to look for one the reviews were bad. I should nag him about it again.

Edit: I don't understand how attaching files works?

That's no problem at all, good luck with getting to grips with the camera and I look forward to seeing the results.

Hi Bubbles, welcome to the forum, have fun here :welcome:

:fuji:

Hi Erin, And welcome aboard TP, looking forward to hearing from you and maybe seeing some of your images on the various forums. "Enjoy"

Hi Bubbles,
First, place the cursor where you want your image to be inserted.

If the image is located on your computer, click the Attach files button and navigate to the file, click on it, and select Open at the bottom of the dialogue box.
It'll appear below your entry; click Insert top-left of the image, and select Full image, and it'll appear in your post.

If you image is hosted online, use the insert image tool (Ctrl+P), and click the By URL option at the top of the box, then copy the image address into the address box. Make sure it's a direct link to the image though, and not to a web page that displays the image, 'cos that won't show on here.

Hi Erin

I note that the Kodak PixPro appears to be what is referred to as a 'Bridge Camera' i.e. with a built-in (non-interchangeable) zoom lens.

Edit ~ can you tell us the exact model of the Kodak PixPro that you have???

If you do a search for 'Photographing Birds with a Bridge Camera' a few YouTube videos come up though none utilising the PixPro. However, they might offer some useful insights for you at this time.

HTH :)

PS when you have sussed out image posting here at TP I look forward to seeing what you have seen in your area.

PPS if you search you using "kodak pixpro wildlife photography" there are websites which give some insights into using that make, though with specific model(s) mentioned.
The likes of post at DPReview are actual users but where you see some website reviews IMO they can be misleading for the novice........in other words read them with (to use the expression) a pinch of salt but still to learn from them about usage but it is where they may use the words "best", "worst" and similar that I take issue. Though that is maybe for a completely different post

I tried the attach file thingy before... lemme try again. It's still not working though, I can't see the full image thing that you're talking about? Perhaps images don't work in introductions?

The full image thing is on the top line.

Are the pictures you want to post on your computer, or online?

And technical ability goes a long way, as does having the right camera and lenses for the subject :)
