Hey everyone. Just registered this morning. Finally pulling out the finger and making an effort to become a good amateur photographer. I'm really into gig photography and car photography and hope to become good enough over the coming months to have some nice photos for you to see.

I've got a Sony DSC-H1 point and shoot and my Canon 400D is on it's way with a Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6 EX DC HSM lens to boot.

Any advice would be great. I'm also quite keen on going out and about the city at night to take architectural photos but don't know how to approach this from both a safety point of view and what to look for. Could I be any more vague? heh.

Anyway, I hope to get to know a few of you and perhaps even make new friends through this hobby.

All the best for the new year to you all.

 Welcome...

If you're going out at night, you're most likely to need a tripod, due to the possible low levels of light. From a safety point of view I'd suggest taking someone with you to watch your kit / you while you set up shots etc, as you'll only have eyes for the shot, which means some little toe-rag could easily have away your bag etc.

Also... I love the sigma 10-20 it's an excellent lens  :D

Thank you for the warm welcome everyone. A friend of mine is also interested in taking up photography so I'm probably going to ask him if he fancies going out at night to take shots.

Also, Matthy, I'm liking the pictures on your flickr, especially the York City Center set. Did you use your Sigma wide angle lens for the York Minister shot? It's lovely.
