I've cheekily posted a thread elsewhere 1st but I thought I should say hello quickly :D

I'm Gemma and I'm 18 and in Cornwall :)

Currently I own a good-at-the-time several years old digital camera, a luxmedia 4008 thing, which I'm sure is slowly dying as it locks up around every 5 minutes now and such, sometimes refuses to focus and generally misbehaves, looking into getting a DSLR though.

Ummm it seems lots of people post links to flickr here, I'm way less exciting and have a photobucket account, but I do have some pictures if anyone likes nosing, they're not great though but a recent album is here when I took a day on holiday to do photography - http://s285.photobucket.com/albums/ll43/rattymonster/Holiday May 2010/

Not much else to say, nice to meet you all though

 Hi Gemma....

Better late than never :p

Thankyou, you're all such friendly people :D

May get a DSLR end of this week!

Photography is cheaper with a 'good-at-the-time' camera. For £140, I had a perfectly capable 12 megapixel Casio camera which did the business. Since plumping for a 'budget' Nikon D40, I have spent approximately £500 in addition to the £350 I put down for the camera.

Don't buy an SLR. :bang:

P.S. Do really. I bought one and it revolutionised photography for me. As much as I cringe when I see the expense of this hobby/past-time/obsession/financial drain, I love learning all about how photography really works and not just how to press a button.

And enjoy your time on TP. Carlsberg don't do internet forums...

I'm not so sure, with it being an older camera it's 1 of those that eats batteries  Rechargeables help but even those eventually need replacing!

I'm trying to pretend it isn't expensive... it's not going too well  I was originally thinking of an iPhone but I've wanted an iPhone for about 3 weeks and a DSLR for about 10 years :D

Considering once bought a midrange one with a bag and extra bits will come in at maybe £1500 and last 3 - 5 years before needing upgrading and a lot of people spend £500 each year on a phone.. it's cheap

You might be pleasantly surprised as to how 'inexpensively' (I refrain from using the word 'cheap' to describe any photography-related purchase unless it's being given away...) you can obtain a good setup. The entry-level dSLRs are great performers and will certainly not limit your photography. I'm only finding now, after two and a half years of my D40, that I'm seeing features on other cameras and thinking "wouldn't it be nice...". :shake:

The Talk Equipment forum is chocabloc with people wanting recommendations as to their first dSLR (you're one of them ;)) and a lot can be had for under £500, including those extra bits n' bobs you've rightly budgeted for!

I allowed extra as I'm going slightly up from the entry level and to allow for "needing" new lenses and filters and such in that time :D

But seeing as you've seen that thread, what's your excuse for not giving your 2p on it? :p

There's always someone better qualified to give advice. :naughty:

That, and I daren't clue myself up on new cameras as I know full well I'll just end up pulling out the plastic and splurging on a D5000.
