Hi all

I'm new to all this, and need some advice. I've been asked to take some portrait shots of family, but have no lights. A friend of mine suggested a couple of 150 watt halogen lights. Is this an option, or was he just taking the proverbial???

Don't know enough about lighting to advise I'm affraid Aidy, but :welcome: to the forum, and I'm sure it wont be long before someone on here will be able to answer you question.

Hi and welcome to the forum

Cant answerer the question for you, but it might help those who can if you give a bit more detail, like what gear you have, how many in a group will there be and environment to be happening in.

I'll be using a Fujifilm s5000 against a plain background. I was just going to slow the shutter speed, but I need to eliminate shadow as well. I've had a few trial runs with flash and adjusting flash, but that still leaves shadows on the background. Any suggestions welcome (other than buying a better camera and expensive studio lights)!!!

Hi Aidy

im not an expert at all, but if you have a plain background thats white, then light that upseperately(lightshining on the wall directly)that will bleach it out and leave the subjects in an uncluttered foreground, if its a coloured background then you want to bounce the flash as well as use a reflector to get the light under the faces as well as directly onto them. Bounce the flash with a piece of white card infront of the flash angled up at the ceiling, experiment and see what you can do!

Thanks Matty

I'll try lighting up the background with the halogen lights and see if that works. Thanks for the tips, all greatly received

Hello :)

and let us know how you get on with the portraits

Hi Aidy, Welcome to the forums.

How did the portrait shoot go?

I'm taking the shots next saturday now. I'm using a plain background lit up with a couple of 100 watt lamps. I'll post them when I've taken them, as any feedback is always appreciated.
