I am thinking about getting a neatural ND filter for my dads canon eos1000D, what do people reckon? thanks.

Don't get confused between ND's and Graduated ND's. The latter are used to control the amount of light entering the lens from the sky (usually), and are clear on one end and grey on the other. The former are used to create long shutter speeds or to photograph very bright subjects safely (the sun for example), and are grey or black all over.
