Hi,

Quick post to introduce myself as a new member, a friend recommended this site to help get me started in taking photography as a little more serious hobby. I live in York but often head to the Scottish hills where I attempt to capture the stunning landscapes on a Lumix TZ-10 - great little camera but I've come to the conclusion that I can do more justice to the scenery with a DSLR (and perhaps some technique which I'm hoping to pick up). Won't just be taking shots in the hills though, I'm quite happy to snap away at most subjects.

Having looked about a bit I'm considering a Canon 550D, perhaps with a 18-135mm lens. Then intending to go to a night-school DSLR class here in York to get me going. Would appreciate any advice on if the equ
ipment is a good place to start.

Cheers!

I've got a 550D and I love it, I only have the kit lens (18-55 is) at the moment but have use of a tamron 55-200 as well, I've taken pictures of cars, plants, people, still life, landscapes and been happy with them all, my technique needs tuned as well as I'm new to a DSLR and the 550 is my first, but I would recommend it definitely. Also on a side note the canon DPP software that comes with the 550 is brilliant for editing photos, couple this with Photoshop for fine tuning/fixing/saving and you'll be very happy.

Hi dan. Welcome to the forum. I am using 400d I bought a few years ago which as an entry level dslr has suited me fine. Have 18-55 kit lens but found this a bit limiting and have just got canon 50mm f1.8 prime (absolute bargain at around £80) and the canon 70-300mm IS 4-5.6 (again great value at about £450). Next stop is canon 10-22 wide angle but think ive spent enough recently. Crop sensor on camera means that widest end of 18-55 isn't actually that wide

Thanks for the welcome and the advice - both much appreciated.

Having seen a colleague's camera today I have even more food for though on lens mix! Looking forward to being able to post some shots when I get my hands on a new camera!!
