Hi everybody

My name is Karen and I am from Hornchurch. Just found this site and it looks great :-) I am new to all of this. Have wanted to do Photography for such a long time has NO experience what so ever but love taking pictures and always on the look out for a great picture.

I was very lucky and was bought a Digital SLR canon EOS 400D and am not trying to find a home study course so I can learn all about how to use the camera :-)

Thanks for reading

Karen

Hallo and welcome.
I was in your position about a year ago with a 4ood and not much idea what to do with it.
My advice would be, turn the dial to the more manual settings (Av and M) and take a LOT of pics, try out all the different settings (ISO, shutter speed, f number) and after a while it will start to become obvious what the various things do.
Have fun and enjoy learning :)

Hi Dan, yeah it;s a little scary if I am honest I love the cam and have wanted to do this for so long but now I have it I am like...OK....what to do now LOL

I have been taking loads of pictures but still not 100% sure what all the functions mean, have not had it very long so really need to learn how to use the thing first :-)

As Dan has said, fiddle with the dial and take loads of photo's to see what happens. had my 400d a couple of months now and just about brave enough to take it off full auto!

LOL I know I have taken loads of shots just all on auto. I just checked out some pictures people have posted on here and they are fab!! I am no wheer as good as that.

Hi KL! Welcome aboard.

I'm with everyone else. Keep your batteries charged, the camera with you and just go shoot all that catches your eye!

Play with the settings. Don't stick to Auto, use the P, A, S and M settings - learn what they do and experiment.

You're gonna get a bunch of bad shots but, out of 100 shots, if you get a couple that are good, then you've done well.

Have fun!

:D:D:D

Oh, and RTFM...

Hello :)

As said above - use auto if you are not confident and must get the shot but use Av and play with different apertures when you have time to play and experiment.

Hi Mart61, wow I just checked out your web site your pictures are fab ;-)

Why thanks Karen-Louise!

Many of those, especially the macro/close up, stuff were taken in the house whilst bored. You may well find, as I do, that you just wanna take pics of stuff. Anything will often do. You can make a shot out of almost anything if you put a little thought into it.

Just play, KL, until you start to get results, and then build on those...

Welcome, Karen-Louise. I suspect that most folk started on Auto - I did - but you'll learn quickly by moving to the other modes. As Robert suggested, try using AV instead. I did this one afternoon, and took about 30 pictures of a plant pot with different aperture settings, and started to understand depth of field

Oh, and post your pics up here too.

hi and welcome
my advice would be to use the camera as much as possible and not be too bothered when the shots arent what you hoped for.
i took my new camera our for a walk the other day and took about 200 shots, about 20 (maybe even less) of which i would be happy showing people ...

Hi and welcome

Thank you for all your warm welcomes. I have checked out some pictures on this web site and I have got so excited. I am so glad I found this place.

Took my camera out yesterday and shot in black and white for the first time. Also did what some of you said and played around with different setting. When I first got it I was too scared to do that but playing around was so much fun and really changed my pictures :-)

Thanks

KL xx

Wicked :-)

I am trying to find a course to help me to use my camera better and to explain what everything means. I hear people using different terms and fuctions and I have no idea what they do or what they mean.
