Hi all,

New to the forum and from the south east of England(10 miles from Brighton). I have never owned a proper camera before. The closest thing I've got to photography is playing around with my camera phone!!
I have been wanting to get into photography for a while after seeing a lot of great photos online. Over the last few weeks I have been doing some reading up on the net and decided on the Nikon d3100 with 18-55 lens.
I went to my local camera shop today to have a look at it in the flesh and have a chat with someone who knows more than me.
Now I am torn!! The man in the shop agreed that this is an excellent starter camera but he showed me the panasonic dmc-fz150. Now I know that this is not a dslr but he said for what I will use it for (mainly point and shoot, pictures of friends and random objects) that I would not notice much picture quality difference between the two. Also for a beginner the fixed lens offers a much greater range without having to buy/carry multiple lenses.
This is purely a bit of fun for me and my girlfriend to play around with in our spare time so I was kind of swayed more towards the Panasonic now due to its ease of use and simplicity.

I look forward to hearing your opinions

Cheers

Nick

From reading some reviews on the FZ150 it would appear to be a cracking bridge camera. (See DP Review)

To be honest you have answered your own question and this would seem the obvious path for you.

The Panasonic will be great for you to use now, and later on if you find that it limits what you want to do, you could progress to a DSLR.

It will teach you a lot about settings or you can just use auto until you learn more.

Yeah, I think I had made up my mind whilst writing my post. I think it will be good to play around with and find my feet a little bit. Once I get used to all the buttons, features and settings I can then look to moving on to the more specialised/advanced cameras out there. Thanks for your help

You are welcome.

Stick around and there is loads of helpful advice on the forum from basics to advanced. There is no such thing as a stupid question!

Just out of interest which shop did you go to?

Yeah I will do. I'm sure I will be using the forum a lot to get advice and tips.
It was park cameras in Burgess Hill

Good choice with Park Cameras, have had several dealings with the both face to face and via phone and web and been very happy with them.
