Hello everyone!!!

I only just learnt that this forum exists after reading through the photography section on AV Forums.

Having just purchased a Canon 550d (my 1st DSLR) this looks like a great place for advice, so please be patient with my upcoming very novice questions :D

Saving up some more money now to buy some decent glass (some recommendations would be nice) and I'll get some pics posted when I'm all set.

Thanks
Rick

Hi Rick! A BIG :welcome: to TP!
It helps if you can put a budget for the lens, then we can give better advice mate!

Yeah a budget would help!!!

looking at roughly £300, maybe £400 at a push.

Also the pictures I would be taking would mainly be portraits of the kids, day trips at the zoo etc.

I've heard good things about the canon nifty fifty, and then maybe get a telephoto for my other needs, would that be a good way too start?

Thanks for your replies,

Rick

Thanks for that Dave, an excellent price!!

The reviews I've read say its a great lens for the money.

That leaves around £200-300 for a telephoto.

Thanks again

Rick

Hi Rick

This is my latest image with my Nifty, one of our grandsons

Welcome from another 'just joined'! May I recommend the Sigma 30/1.4 lens, loads of fun to run around with on a APS-C body.

The 50mm lens while cheap and great, becomes a bit too 'tele' - 80mm - for general purpose use because of the 1.6x factor from the smaller sensor in your camera. The 30mm becomes a 48mm on the same camera, it's a perfect walk-around lens and a fast one at that.

Sigmas get a bad rap on autofocus etc and I've had a few duds myself over the years, but this one is staying in the bag (the other Sigmas have moved on).

That said, if you don't splurge on the sigma, go for nifty :) Everybody needs a fast "normal" focal length prime lens.

lovely pic there Dave, and from a lens for £75 you can't go wrong

@vaizki - Thanks for the info, I'll think I'll go for the nifty for now and see how I get on. If I do find it a bit 'tele' I'll look into the one you suggested.

Rick
