hello all, i have always been interested in photography and feel ive got an eye for a good shot, ive only ever done it has some fun using a point and shoot tho.
im finaly looking at getting an SLR so thought this would be a good place to start learning as i have absolutly no knowledge on these cameras.

:welcome:

SLR or DSLR...?...:D

if you ask about which camera to start with, i suggest you include your interests - sports or portraits for example , and an idea of your budget

have a ''search'' too, there's lotsa info about picking a new camera....good luck..!

confused already now between slr and dslr :)

id mainly like to take shots of landscapes, buildings, cars, and then others such as my little kiddy and pets etc. i know thats quite a wide range of shots tho :|
and budget wise, i was hoping to maybe pick up a second hand cam for around the £250 mark

hi

.
im finaly looking at getting an SLR so thought this would be a good place to start learning as i have absolutly no knowledge on these cameras.

a good starter Nikon camera is the D40....one for sale here @ £150...''link''

the 'kit' lens [meaning the one usually supplied as a package[ is the zoom 18-55mm AF-S about £60 used

the 18-55mm AF-S VR has Vibration Reduction - a good thing....:D about £80 used

you need AF-S designated lenses on the D40 as it, along with others in its line, dont have a focusing motor in the camera body

a cracking lens is the 18-70mm AF-S - one here for £120.....''link''
-----------------------------------------------------

later, you can easily sell the D40 ...and defo KEEP the 18-70mm
buy a D90 body maybe

edit ...all prices are ''roughly''

I had a d40x as my first dslr which was a great starting point. £150 for a d40 is a great price and is a great camera for learning the basics.

The only annoying thing about the d40 is that it doesn't have inbuilt auto focus but I found that it just made me practise more to become better with manual focusing. Especially when I bought a nifty fifty to go with it.

I'm finally looking to upgrade now after 3 years with it as I feel I've found it's limitations, but it's been a great camera for that time.

So yeah, as suggested, go with the d40 for now, and upgrade as you get to it's limits. :-)

not really 'annoying' just a fact

i have no problem with the D5000 using AF-S lenses
18-55mm AF-S VR
55-200mm AF-S VR....both of which take 52mm filters BTW

certainly not ''Pro-glass' but ok for my budget

Also i can use my Nikkor 50mm 1.8 Ai lens too [from my F3] should i need a fast f1.8 on the D5000 -- there is an electronic ''in-focus'' light

if you had bought the 35mm 1.8 AF-S it would have auto-focused too............ @£170 new.....:D

thanks for your replies, and the advice yardbent! yes ive heard good things about the d40, shame i cant see the link because i dont have access, i would snap that up for £150, there must be a post limit on the classifieds or paid memebership, im unsure.
im still into researching these anyway so no rush, will keep browsing the site
