Hello everyone.
I've dabbled in photography for many years now, and have decided to finally retire my dated Nikon D50.
Currently shopping for something new, not overly expensive, and more suited to my current needs. I've found that I only use my phone for most situations at the moment because of the size of a DSLR
Basically I want something which I can have on hand all the time, so smaller than the DSLR, but which has the kind of controls I'm used to and creates good image quality, mainly for use in the wild and I'm likely to get some printed up to A3 size max. Also some lightbox/macro product photography but those images will only be going on websites and social media.
What are everyone's first hand experiences of smaller form factor devices?

Hi Pin, welcome to the forum and enjoy your self here.

I’m a Fuji man, and I use a X-A5 as a walkabout camera :fuji:

Hi Norkie,
Looks like a lot of camera for the money that. Is it much smaller than a DSLR?

The X-A5 is a lot smaller than a DSLR. There are good deals to be had in the used market also.

Hi, And welcome aboard TP. "Enjoy"

I moved to Olympus Micro 4/3rds cameras from a Pentax DSLR for similar reasons.
Much lighter and more compact - great selection of lenses from small and cheap to large and expensive depending on what you're up to.
The OM-D E-M10 line is the smallest, then the M5 then M1 and finally MX
Panasonic also use the same mount and lenses are broadly compatible across the two manufacturers

Hi Pin
Welcome. There is a dedicated Equipment forum, and within it are links to specific brands which you might find helpful. (I think there is a pinned post at the top with all the specific camera links in)

I have both Canon and Olympus micro 4/3 cameras. Olympus cameras are great when you want something smaller but can still have all the controls at your fingertips and the lenses are excellent. Some of the Olympus cameras have in camera focus stacking which I find useful for macro - other brands may also offer this, I don't know. My Canon mainly gets used on dedicated photography outings or when using flash, purely because I have the flash set up for it. I have been known to take both on holiday and only use the Olympus.

Thanks all for the replies. And I will certainly take a look at the equipment forum.
Initially I was looking at a decent compact - Lumix LX15 seemed decent, compact and has a 1 inch sensor and large aperture at a wide angle. But that led me to look at the GX80. I think there are pros and cons of both. It's bothering me that I cant just go to a store and get then in hand.

I’ve gone for a LUMIX GX80. Seems like a very good camera. A little older but that’s probably why it’s an attractive price at nearly £200 less than the GX9.
