Hello I am new to this forum and any Photography forum come to think of it.
I am a keen Photoshop Artist and 3d Applications. However that is not what you guys are interested in you want my photography background dont you.

Well here it is I do it purely as a hobbyI do not have thousands of pounds worth of equipment however I have a good setup for what I need But looking to upgrade.

I Use Nikon D5000 and have done since it was released but starting to think I should have got the D90. But looking around to see if I should invest in the new D4 or a D3 possibly even the D700 will be plenty good enough fo me as I want a full frame and not the Dx Crop.

I love this look which I can create in photoshop with my camera however I want it done mostly in camera so only needs tweaking in ACR or Lightroom it is almost a soft focus look yet still sharp where it needs to be and the colours are almost washed out I guess slight vintage or cross processing describes it well.

I will try and find an example on Flickr as I cant seem to upload files directly in a post and I am guessing if this is like a forum I am a Mod at PhotoshopGurus then you probably cant post links until I have made a certain amount of posts and I dont want to be seen as spamming.

Basically my question is is this look only achievable with an expensive camera as it is down to the sensor and image processing ability or is it all lens the only common factor I can see in it is either they are all Cannon Mark 1 or Nikon D3 range with lenses that are all using aperatures around 2.4 Which is what I am guessing to be the what I need.

So before I spend thousands of punds on a lens and possibly a new body can I create this cheaply with basic lenses.

I have Nikon 18-55 kit lens
70-200 Vr Lens
and a tamron 70-300

Ok here goes the image you have all been waiting for lol.

Not after the sun Flair part I know that helps with the look even though this example is slightly overdone. But want the soft edge look and slightly washed out without the post processing headache of eding hundreds of pictures

Thank you and I look forward to interacting with you all.

Mostly Hope to find people local to me to go out and learn together on photography walks etc.

Guess I cant post links yet Sorry about that I am sure I will upload them as soon as I can

Hi, welcome to TP. I think you have copied the wrong code over. If you are posting from Flickr you need to grab the BB code (share button above the image) and paste it in. However, if they are not your pictures I would just post a link to them so you don't get into areas of copyright.

Welcome :)
You won't be able to do that effect in camera unless you get one of the lower end DSLR's with creative modes and effects. It's probably best to make an action in photoshop and use that when you import, or If you use lightroom there should be some similar ones preloaded

Ok maybe this is clearer this is a screen cap from a dvd no processing it is naturally washed out

I am assuming it is the low DOF that gives it this look.

The examples you have posted all look different to me, i cant see a common style really. 2 have hidden EXIF, but the last one has it avaialble and it was shot on a Leica. However, the general 'style' in the images can all be applied in Lightroom and / or Photoshop. Im sure there will be a whole load of commercial plug-ins that will do this in one click.

If you are just refering to the shallow DoF then you just need a lens with a wide aperture, a 35mm or 50mm f1.8 for example. The Nikon 35mm 1.8 af-s costs around £160 and can be used all of Nikons entry level SLR's. You certainly dont need to be spending £1000's on full frame cameras to get a shallow DoF.
