Hello all,

I love taking photos and really began in Feb last year. There has been a recent break in my photography just recently as when I was around 7 months pregnant I seemed to lack any creativity, but now my daughter is 3 months and I am begining to get a steady 6/7 hours sleep at night I intend to pursue my hobby again.

This forum looks great for learning from, my aim this year is to understand my camera a lot more and to venture out of 'auto' mode without my current response to images of "hmmm, so what did I do and why did that happen?!" Also thinking about joining the local camera club to me, but one step at a time.

Good luck and best wishes for your family

Hi Zoe and welcome to the friendliest of forums.

People here will be more than happy to give honest and useful advice and critique of your photo's. All of which will help you get the most out of your camera, yourself and your hobby.

welcome and enjoy.

oh no - more ickle babieee photos.......:lol:

seriously....:welcome:

move over to aperture mode, and you'll soon be posting pictures of the wee one

doh, just noticed you got a D40.....:bonk:

the manual is rubbish
get the Field Guide to D40/D40x from Amazon - explains things much better

for the first step away from "Auto" you could try "P" mode
the camera still selects the correct exposure combination, but you can alter the aperture - thus seeing what the camera does in response

assuming you have the kit 18-55 DX lens it does lovely close-ups too

there is also a "Portraits" mode which I think softens skin-tones

you prob know all this, so I'll shut-up now.....

Congratulations on the arrival of the new model ooops sorry I meant baby. Welcome to TP hope you learn all you need to know to take great pictures.

Cheers

Terry

Hello and thankyou all for your welcome, this really is the friendliest of forums :)

Some great advice already, thanks John for your comments, the book is now on my amazon wishlist  and this weekend I should be hands free to have a play out of 'auto'. Maybe I'll get some shots to put into the share and critique section.
