Hello all,

I'm Claire from Wednesbury in The Black Country UK.

Had my camera for a while now, a Nikon D40, so not the best, but hey, it's fine for now :)

I joined the site specifically to ask about printing of photographs and after browsing before joining I noticed there were a number of threads and some people were getting told off and being told to use the search.

Where do I find the search so that I don't annoy everyone by starting a new thread that's been seen a trillion times already?

I'm trying to really develop my photography now and get out with my camera much more. I've also recently downloaded the trial of Lightroom 4 which I have to say I'm loving!

So hopefully see you guys around, although I'll probably be asking many more questions than giving answers :)

Don't be afraid to ask questions it's what the forum exists for so if you have a question go on and ask it, it's probably been asked before but that really doesn't matter honest, and if anyone takes it upon themselves to tell you to search then report them, the ethos of TP is to be a friendly place for everyone

Thank you Alfie :)

I did start a new thread in the end as I searched and couldn't quite find what I was looking for.

Good to have another Black Country member Claire and as matt has said ask away and ignore those (and there only a very few) who get stroppy about duplicate threads, now what is your printing question and we'll see if we can get an answer

Hi Nigel :) How bin ya ;)

Well! I did a session of portraits for a DJ friend of mine and her dad wants one of them printed pretty large, approx 20" x 29" (also an odd size, ikea frame *rolls eyes*), in B&W.

It will be the first time I'll have had any image printed and I'm a little confused about what info I need to provide to the printing lab (I did get one reply on my other thread suggesting Ilfords for B&W prints, they look pretty good).

Ilfords say that for a 24" x 36" print it needs to be 7200 x 10800 pixels. If I put those pixel (dimensions) into Lightroom when exporting and tell the print lab the size in inches will that be correct?

Also, how large can I go? I took the photo with a Nikon D40 which is 6.1mp with my 18 - 55mm lens. The image is well focused. Will it be ok at the size I mentioned above?

Really appreciate your help. I have also requested a test print from Ilfords to attempt to calibrate the monitor (i have done it to a degree but want to make sure as this print won't be cheap).

Oops and sorry Matt (for calling you Alfie), I need to pay more attention!

Well what I always do (In photoshop but I presume Lightroom is the same) is in the Document size I put the size I will be printing and the resolution I have always been told is best at 300 dpi.

With regard to the print size from the D40 well I have a print on the wall thats 20x16 taken on a Canon D60 that was 6 megapixels and its pin sharp, with the larger sizes its really just a matter of trial and error

I see they mention the 300dpi on the Ilfords site. In lightroom it is pixels per inch, ppi, I take it this is the same thing?

So I would enter the size in cms or inches and the ppi (dpi) at 300 and I'm good to go?

I read an article yesterday that pretty much said if in your image the eyes are focused you can pretty much go as big as you like because the bigger the image the further away you would be to view it anyway. (within reason I suppose)

Thanks so much for your help Nigel :)

You have it Claire, what i would suggest is get just one printed at a larger size by one of the cheaper online sites,I find Bonusprint very good and see what the quality is like before you get a load done, any problems get back in touch.

By the way there is a Warwickshire and West Midlands group that matt runs who meat up a few times each year, would be nice to see you there

Do I need to join the group to get notifcations of meet ups?
