Hi, I'm Anthony and I'm a second year Accounting and Finance student at Bangor University in North Wales.

My parents bought me a Canon 400D last Christmas but I never really got round to learning how to use it or how to take 'good' pictures. So I've just bought a little 12.2MP Samsung camera for general picture taking and decided to learn how to use my Canon properly!

Bearing in mind that I am a total beginner to this hobbie (and a student so nothing overly expensive!), I was wondering if there were any 'must haves' if I am going to give photography a proper chance!

I have a Canon EOS 400D camera and a Canon EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II lens.

What are the first things that I should be looking to add to my kit (or do I have enough to get started with)?

Thanks,
Anthony :)

(P.S. Can someone explain what this means please: EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II)

Hi Anthony, and welcome :)
One of the best things you can do to help yourself is to read a book called 'Exposure' by Bryan Peterson. It's only a thin book, and once you've read it, everything becomes clear!

Hi Anthony, and :welcome: to TP.

You may want to check out the tutorials sub-forums, there's plenty of information there to help you out.

Welcome to the forum...

Regarding your lens:

EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II

EF-S is the type of Canon fit (Only Crop cameras ***D or **D).
18-55mm is the focal length.
F3.5-5.6 is the aperture range.

So at 18mm F3.5 and at 55mm F5.6

Hope that helps...

Plenty more info in the talk equipment section...
